(My apologies if you've read this previously - I wasn't aware of the group email)

My Great grandfather, Dawid Kruk was born in 1869 in Wyszogrod. In 1888, at the age of 19, he relocated to Zychlin, presumably to marry and raise a family. Dawid was a pious Jew and became a hebrew school teacher at the local synagogue in Zychlin (pictured below). He fathered 12 children, although only 5 survived childhood. He and his wife, Dwojra Lewkowicz (Devorah b. 1876) raised their grandson (and my father) Peretz, after his mother died during childbirth. They were extremely poor and always hungry, but otherwise a very loving family. They lived at ul. Kilinskiego #11, steps from the town synagogue.

My father tells me that several survivors told him of Dawid being taunted outside the Zychlin synagogue by Nazis during Yom Kippur, 1941. They poured gasoline on him and told him to "dance, Jew, dance". When he complied, they casually tossed a match at him and yelled "burn, Jew, burn", and "let's see if your Hebrew God will save you now". My great grandfather had enough time to say the first few words of Kaddish before dying an agonizing death.

I am curious to know if any group members have a family connection to the Kruk - Lewkowicz family from Zychlin, or know of this story in particular. I do know that most of the surviving Dawid Kruk youngsters ( Jozef, Luzer (my grandfather), Leon and Chaskiel) moved on to Lodz, presumably for better economic opportunities.

Hi everybody,

I am sorry I cannot help anyone of the Zychlin Group about genealogy or historical facts in Zychlin after 1941.

My father Hershl Jakov (Henryk) Wrobel, 22 years in January 1941, was living at Grabow 1, Zychlin, with his parents Nusen Wrobel and Sara, born Werman. He had younger brohers and sisters : Maryim, Ruchla, Tauba, Riven-Simche (Romek), Froyim-Majer. His father Nusen was selling poultry in Zychlin or markets and fairs in the surrounding towns or in Lodz.

My father was deported in January 1941 in a Reichsautobahn (RAB) lager, an itinerant Auschwitz sub-camp along the highway Lodz-Berlin.

I visited Zychlin in July 1967 and May 1995, with my father.

I gathered information from my father until his death 11 years ago but get very few information about his youth and genealogy.

My father had a cousin in Brooklyn, NY, Harry Wrobel, son of Avrum-Elie. In 1990, my parents and I were in Brooklyn and thanks to Harry, we met 2 sisters of the Makower family. At this occasion, I heard the name of Kanarek for the first time.

In Zychlin, my father had a aunt, Mima Bina, who was married to Hershl Kuwent. Bina was killed. Kuwent survived and came to Paris, France, like my parents.

After the war, my father found friends from Zychlin : Szlamek Bol, Abram Mastbaum, Abram Rozenkopf in France, Moshe Zyslender in Israel, Charles Sieradski (Sears) in New Jersey, and Neumann in Canada.

Moshe Zyslender was the originator of the monument in the Zychlin Jewish cemetery and an active member of the Zychlin Society in Tel Aviv.

I had confirmation about my father's places of deportation thanks to ITS Bad Arolsen but I had to wait 2 years to get these documents. I also got from the Jewish Museum in Warsaw, some tax documents regarding my great grandfather Fayvish and granduncle Avrum Elie living in Zychlin, too.

I think that you have the essential information about my family and friends from Zychlin.

I would be happy if I can be on any help.
If one of you knows about the persons named in my mail, please let me know.

Best Regards.

Suzy
