Hard to say without more info to go on, but usually the problems are 1) your camera doesn't focus or 2) it's too close to focus, or 3) you're scanning something not supported

Technique can't fix bad coding or encoding, but I've found success with these two techniques.

1. "Stand Off/Zoom In". Stand off 7 or 8 inches to allow best focus, then zoom in to fill the aperture for best recognition.

2. "Scan Up". Refine your scanning technique by experimenting with aiming the aperture towards the bottom of 1D barcodes and then moving it up towards the top. For DataMatrix barcodes I've experimented sccessfully with scanning up and right ("Scan Right Up").

Things like panning should not matter. If you have success at a certain distance farther than you imagine, just leave it there. Being a little too far is much better than too close.
