Just building the sample iOS project in release mode gives you compilation
error:

Error MT2002: Failed to resolve "System.Boolean
System.Type::op_Equality(System.Type,System.Type)" reference
from "mscorlib, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e" (MT2002)

Or am I missing something?

I don't know anything about this issue, but given that the project compiles
for intended targets and there's no note from anyone else, I assume this is
either specific to your env or just not supported.

Yeah, just to follow up, nothing in that error message looks remotely
familiar to me.

You are trying to build an app against the Xamarin stable release but the
assembly which you are using is built against the beta version.
You should try a newer version of the assembly.
If you are using the ZXing.Net.Mobile component then get the latest version
from here:
http://components.xamarin.com/view/zxing.net.mobile/
