I don't know how IKEA barcodes their products, but I imagine it is a
standard format like Code 39. As such the scanner can already read it.
The problem is, the content of the barcode is some ID that is
meaningless to anyone but IKEA; we couldn't do anything with it.

I don't think copyright has any bearing on this, no.

Thanks very much for the reply,I just planned a small program on IKEA
shopping list,so if zxing could decode the IKEA barcodes will help me
a lot..
I also tried once a IKEA barcode with barcode scanner.failed...only
once...

I found a document which said they were going to switch to a GS1
databar for all their products in 2007.
That looks similar to a code39 but slightly different. Seem that they
use multiple bar widths.
I don't know if they adopted this worldwide yet...
http://www.google.nl/url?sa=t&source=web&ct=res&cd=1&ved=0CA0QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fbarcodes.gs1us.org%2Fdnn_bcec%2FDocuments%2Ftabid%2F136%2FDMXModule%2F731%2FCommand%2FCore_Download%2FDefault.aspx%3FEntryId%3D165&ei=_Un3SqqwDcOd4QarzYjjAw&usg=AFQjCNHP9Uwa3JWlpuKmAyt4VndXc8HWDg&sig2=95naTvk1TEG2mYYx7ciagw

Ikea uses an 8 digit product number so it might just be that code that
is encoded in the GS1 databar.

I think you are right,it is GS1 databar...and the specification pdf on
ISO is so expensive...(CHF 168,00 )!!!
OMG.....

I collected some IKEA barcodes from Holland but they do not look like
a GS1 databar.
Correct me if I'm wrong but the GS1 databar consists of 2 1D barcodes?

Here is an example someone else put online :

You could try to use the code39 decoder which also should be able to
recognize that pattern.
I presume they have changed some of the rules of what the recognized
patterns should look like.
The barcodes see to have a fixed number of patterns and the unique
IKEA product code seems to be related directly to the patterns.
I have 2 products which have almost the same product code and this is
reflected in the barcode.

I'll try to scan them and put them somewhere online.
Our son was just born a few days ago so please give me a few days for
putting them online. =)

Do we have a folder in the repository for this by the way?

I've uploaded 2 pictures :

If you look at the Nackten labels (with almost similar product codes)
you'll see that the barcodes are also very similar.

It looks like Code 39 or ITF but isn't quite either. I am guessing it
is some very similar format, just can't guess what it is by looking.

Out of interest I did some digging into the IKEA barcode format.
It's a ITF-14 format and the zxing library has no problems decoding
it. =)

Cool! Would be nice if we could load the appropriate page on their
site.

You probably can...

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/availability/20075966/tempe?

notice the 20075966? thats the code from the barcode... unfortunately
their online page also requires the store name... in this case it
tempe arizona.

but, it doesn't seem to work on all the codes that Bas Vijfwinkel
posted

That's probably because those products are only sold in Holland and
might not be in the collection of IKEA in other countries.
When I enter the product codes in the url for the Dutch IKEA, all
items show up.
