Hello Friends,

The Bombay COALition would like to extend a warm invitation to you and your organisation, family, friends and anyone wishing to work and stand in solidarity with the dirty energy struggles, for its Launch Event on Saturday, 29th March 2014.

Who are we?
The Bombay COALition will help support dirty energy impacted communities of Konkan region and other parts of Maharashtra. The overarching goal is to strengthen the environmental justice movement in the state by meaningfully enhancing the involvement of urban population in grassroots energy and environment struggles across the state.

We are a diverse group of concerned, energized and youthful citizens associated with different organisations but united by our passion for the environment and the movement against coal. To begin with we want to focus on simple activities that primarily address two aspects - public awareness, engagement and media attention.

Our Launch Event

Our event coincides with WWF's annual Earth Hour project. It’s quite a popular day of action with people individually taking action by turning off their lights or joining an event in their town or city. We want to encourage our friends to go deeper into understanding the issue of energy and electricity in particular. We hope that we can urge people to make the connections between where our electricity and energy is produced to how we consume and waste so much of it.

Date: Saturday, 29th March 2014

Time: 18:00 - 21:30 (20:30 - 21:30 is Earth Hour)

Venue: St. Xaviers College, Fort (Seminar room in the basketball court)

Goals

  • Launch the group and state the purpose of the group to a public audience
  • Invite more people to be part of the group and take up roles
  • Organize Earth Hour with a difference and bring to attention coal struggles in the Konkan and other parts of Maharashtra

Agenda

  • Solidarity Group Launch: 18:00 - 20:30  It will be a fun-filled launch with exciting ice-breakers, talk from a grassroots-level group working on struggles in Konkan, a film screening and music. It'll serve as a platform to know each other better and agree on a clear purpose for the group. We look forward to making new allies and exploring partnerships with local environmental and associated groups.
  • Earth Hour Solidarity Action: 20:30 - 21:30  It will be a creative activity to stand in solidarity with communities that are adversely impacted just so that we can have electricity. This is a symbolic activity, but we want to make sure we spread a deeper understanding and acknowledgment of people that are impacted.

We really look forward to be joined by you on our inaugural event and hope to initiate a deeper alliance with you for our future acts of solidarity with the impacted communities of Maharashtra.

Kindly RSVP to help us facilitate better!
Thank you
Regards
Chaitra Yadavar.
