With the U.S. recycling level stagnating around 35 percent and 180 million tons of municipal waste per year flowing to trash incinerators and landfills, more investment is needed to increase waste prevention, reuse, and recycling capacity. One example of an effective funding mechanism has existed for decades in a number of states and some local jurisdictions. Surcharges on waste disposed at landfills and incinerators can raise significant revenue to support financial assistance programs for building local recycling programs and infrastructure.
At this webinar, you will learn:
- How state-level grantmaking can provide funding and support for business, nonprofit, local government, and community-led waste diversion and recycling initiatives
- What a waste disposal surcharge is and how it encourages circular economies
- How funding and support for waste diversion and recycling can effectively flow from the state level to local governments, businesses, nonprofits, and communities
- Examples of states, and some local governments, that have funded programs and infrastructure for recycling and other waste diversion activities using disposal surcharge revenue
