The establishment of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Advisory Board of Eminent Persons on Zero Waste (the Advisory Board on Zero Waste) was announced by the Secretary-General at the High-Level Meeting on the “Role of Zero Waste as a Transformative Solution in Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)”, held during the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on 30 March 2023. Following General Assembly resolution 77/161, the 12 members of the Advisory Board are tasked, within a three-year term, to promote local and national zero-waste initiatives through awareness-raising and dissemination of best practices and success stories.
At this year’s International Day of Zero Waste, attention was spotlighted on textile and fashion waste as a growing sustainability challenge, with the industry generating millions of tons of waste annually. Fast fashion, overproduction, and limited recycling infrastructure contribute to landfill overflow, pollution, and resource depletion, among other socio-economic development challenges. A zero-waste approach to textiles and fashion requires rethinking material use, fostering circular economy practices, and developing policies that incentivize sustainable production and consumption and inform public awareness and responsible action.
This webinar will explore innovative policies and initiatives tackling textile and fashion waste, showcasing solutions that promote circularity, sustainable design, extended producer responsibility, and waste valorization. It will highlight practical strategies that governments, businesses, and communities can adopt to transition towards a zero-waste fashion industry.
Objectives
This webinar aims to bridge the gap between awareness and action, equipping stakeholders with insights into effective policies and practical interventions for reducing textile and fashion waste.
Expected outcomes of the event:
· Showcasing Good Practices: Present successful practical initiatives addressing textile and fashion waste.
· Policy Innovation & Scaling Up Solutions: Discuss regulatory frameworks that drive circularity in the fashion industry.
· Knowledge Sharing & Awareness: Connect policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and advocates to exchange insights.
The event is open to policymakers, waste practitioners, local and national government representatives, industry professionals, sustainability advocates, researchers, NGOs, youth groups and anyone passionate about transforming the fashion sector into a zero-waste model.
Join us as we explore how policies and practices can reshape the fashion industry to be more sustainable, circular, and waste-free!
