Dear Osama,

Thank you very much for your emails.  I had to look through some aspects in more detail before replying, so I apologize for the delay.

To start with the question listed above regarding the class exercise, I used the quiz grade as a base for calculating the grade but adjusted the grade upwards due to oral exercises that we did in class.  Although the oral participation is already considered, due to the fact that we did not do any other written exercises, I did not want to have people judged solely by the quiz on the class exercise and case grade.  I hope this clarifies it a bit.  My intention was to help students with this approach in terms of their grades, while at the same time considering the understanding demonstrated in the quiz.

In terms of the discussion board, I graded based on relative contribution considering both quantity and quality.  I did consider to a limited extend when postings were made, but mainly focused on the extend and quality of the individual postings and their frequency.  To put the grading in perspective it may be helpful to consider what a grade of “B” reflects.  For that, the student handbook offers a definition:  “Achievement considerably above acceptable standards. Good mastery of course materials is evident and the student’s performance demonstrates a degree of originality, creativity, or both. The grade usually indicates that the student works fairly well independently and often demonstrates initiative."

My point here is that a B should not be considered a bad grade.

On the discussion board in particular, the level of contribution is very hard to judge.  Yes, a single post well written may have a lot weight and may spur discussion.  At the same time, if everybody just writes a piece without considering what others said, then there is not much of a discussion.  There is not even evidence that postings are being read.  As such, we need both longer postings as well as responses for it to be a discussion.  Therefore, I gave points both for large postings as well as for small comments.  Of course, a well written larger comment received more points than a brief reply.  This is were I differentiated the quality.  After summing the points allocated to each students, I ranked the contributions and assigned grades.

I hope that somewhat clarifies the grading on those two items.

I will respond to the third email separately.

Best,

Dr. Hanko

Last question Dr. Hanko: what is the difference between class exercise and quiz? The only graded one in class was the quiz. I am really not sure why I got 92 in exercise.

My target is just to understand the criteria Dr. Hanko. I deeply apologize for my many mails. I think many students are asking the same.

Dear Dr. Hanko,

Tanks for posting the grades.

For learning purposes, what are your comments on the white paper and on the Video. We really worked hard to target full mark but it would be interesting to know that there is room for improvement.

Thanks

Osama

Subject: Re: QUESTION

Dear Osama,

Yes, I did see that you worked hard on the paper and I have looked at it again and have decided that I can stretch the grade to a 96/97 range.  This will not affect your grade, but the grade of some of your group members.

I am very glad you are inquiring about the paper even though it will not change your grade personally.  Below are my comments on the paper and why it has not received a perfect mark:

Part of the issue is that your citations are not strictly according to APA standard.  The reference should start with the last name of the first author, oftentimes you have the first name in front of the last name.  This seems like a minor issue at first, but it not only leads to confusion in terms of the reference list, but also to wrong references in the paper.  For example, on page 10 you reference "Jenifer, 2016".  This is not just a misspelled name (one ’n', instead of two 'n’) and a wrong year (2016 cannot be referenced yet), but if should also read “Bell, 2013” instead.  Again, just an example how poor referencing can mix up things.

There are some other minor issues, such as pictures being to small or not easily readable.  Yes, the latter is a very minor issue, but it adds to having not a perfect paper.

The paper is overall well written and has a nice logic and a core focus.  However, I lose track of what you are talking about on page 6 when you talk about “Understanding the problem: The internal versus external factors”.  What are those factors internal or external to?  It seems like your frame of reference here is not well specified.  What you consider external factors, for me do not seem to be different than the internal factors.  This sections would need further explanation and clarification.  Some aspects in general could use some additional, logical explanation.  There are also aspects where you could have added some additional support.  For example, on page 9 you claim that “no one can deny the fact that more and more people all over the world become drug addicted”.  Is that true?  Do we have increased drug addiction, or is it just a perception because it is in the media all the time?  I am not saying this is not the case, but I would like to see some support and evidence for claims like that.  It would have been better to reference a solid statistic here which shows an increase in drug addiction.  Also page 9, what are “high alert dangerous drugs”?  I am not familiar with this term, so I would need to be explained what you mean by it.  On page 10 you are referring to US data, but you are not giving a reference.  At least I presume you are referring to US data, as it is not explicitly stated, could also be worldwide data or local data; this would need to be stated.

Page 12 needs development.  Instead of “referred to” it should read “attributed to” lack of vision, and then you should go on and explain more specifically what you mean.  Further on page 12, you start by “What distinguishes CCAD…” and go on to talk about a newer type of machine versus those currently used in the ‘mother company’.  Is this really the distinction?  Is it really the type of machine being used or are there other, more important differences?  It seems to me that the use of a newer machine simply stems from having newer technology available.  The underlying problem is however a much deeper one, not tied to the type of machine, but to convincing the right people to make necessary policy changes.

In terms of the workflow chart, rather than adding it without commentary, you could have worked out the key differences to better support your point.  All in all, there were a few other parts where some more clarification would have been helpful.

You are also not referring to your interviews that you conducted.

These are just some aspects that I noticed.

As for the video, I thought it was really well made.  What would have been even better is if you had used your own footage more rather than relying on Cleveland Clinic footage. It was really well done, though.  Very professional.  The key message, the breadth of change this entails, did not seem that clear in the video, though.  So I would have liked to see a bit more clarity on the point you were making in the video.  That’s why I took a few points off here.

I hope this shows why I did not give a full mark, although I think it was a really great project.  If you have further questions on it, I am happy to meet and discuss.

On a separate yet related note, I wanted to ask if you (and whoever from the group is interested) would like to develop this further into a full case study.  I think the story and setting is interesting and it may be a great opportunity to develop a teaching case or teaching exercise from this.  I would be more than happy to work on this with whoever is interested and push it to get published.  You put a lot of effort into this and it could be beneficial for all of us.  If you are interested, we should set up a meeting and discuss next steps.  I am certainly very excited about this project.

Best,

Dr. Hanko
