Gigais derived from the Greek word γίγας (ggas), meaning "giant". The Oxford English Dictionary reports the earliest written use of giga in this sense to be in the Reports of the IUPAC 14th Confrence Internationale de Chimie in 1947: "The following prefixes to abbreviations for the names of units should be used: G giga 109."[1] However, it was already used in 1932 by the German organization Verband deutscher Elektrotechniker.[2]

When referring to information units in computing, such as gigabyte, giga may sometimes mean 1073741824 (230); this causes ambiguity. Standards organizations discourage this and use giga- to refer to 109 in this context too.[3][4][non-primary source needed] Gigabit is only rarely used with the binary interpretation of the prefix. The binary prefix gibi has been adopted for 230, while reserving giga exclusively for the metric definition.

According to the American writer Kevin Self, a German committee member of the International Electrotechnical Commission proposed giga as a prefix for 109 in the 1920s, drawing on a verse (evidently "Anto-logie") by the German humorous poet Christian Morgenstern that appeared in the third (1908) edition of his Galgenlieder (Gallows Songs).[6][7] This suggests that a hard German [ɡ] was originally intended as the pronunciation. Self was unable to ascertain when the /dʒ/ (soft g) pronunciation came into occasional use, but claimed that as of 1995 it had returned to /ɡ/ (hard g).[8][9]

Hi, I have a brand new Giga R1 and a Display shield. The Display is blank. I cannot get any graphics to display. I have installed all of the libraries. I have tried all examples.... IMU example shows data in serial, as does the touch example. RGB LED and microphone are working. I have tried the backlight example and it also works (I can see the backlight getting brighter and dimmer). Just no graphics is there anything that I could try?

Hi b707, I will take your advice and read the guidelines. I think the problem is with the display because the unit is brand new (Giga and display) Nothing is connected to the giga other than the display. They were correctly assembled and then powered on. Then I loaded the Giga library and then the display libraries. Every example works with the exception being, no graphics.

Please ensure that you have connected the display in the correct position as shown in this tutorial, specifically, to use the GIGA Display Shield, mount it on the bottom side of the GIGA R1 WiFi board. The GIGA R1 WiFi board will be flipped upside down when the display is used.

It might help Arduino to help solve some of these problems, if they had additional information. Things like maybe a couple of pictures. One that shows the front of the GIGA shield and another showing from the back of the Shield that shows the Arduino GIGA board. That way they maybe can see if it looks like the two are properly plugged into each other.

It starts off doing something I often do with display sketches and fills the screen with a solid color pauses, shows a different color... In this case Red, Green, Blue, White, Black. But in this case while I am doing this, I am also turning on the RGB led on the shield with the same colors.

If this all succeeds, it should show some color squares on the left hand side of the display. touching the screen in one of these boxes should choose a color, and touching elsewhere on the screen should draw in that color. When you are touching the LED should show green, and then go off when not touching...

As @KurtE mentioned please add more details like images of the display behaviour and picture of the board. If you tried to run some of the examples which examples you tried and what was the behaviour on the screen? If it was always just a blank screen or any colors?

I found that I didn't have the display pins pushed all the way into the giga headers. Once I did that the display lit up but this is all it shows. I've tried running the examples programs and also the sketch posted in this thread and it also looks just like this.

Hi , I have been looking at these posts as I seem to have the same problems. Using your code the LED flashes the different colours but the screen flashes some lines and then stays a dull white. For information the demo code with the touch sensor and giro work fine. thanks.

Mine looks identical to this when the program has not loaded fully and is stuck at setup. For example if I have a temperature probe that is not initialising and it's stuck in a while loop in setup. The code never loads beyond that.

I'd like to highlight something mrcarlfox said above. Be sure the display board is fully seated. I'm a veteran gray-haired electronics engineer, I know how to put together electronic assemblies in my sleep. But I made the exact same mistake. I did have the display plugged in on the correct side of the board, but I thought to myself, "this connection is not very secure", and assumed things would be more robust when I install standoffs to bolt the assembly together.

After reading the post above, I revisited the connection and found the problem. My Giga board had been shipped with one of the display connector's "caps" still installed. This is a small square "cap" that plugs into the connector, and gives a flat surface that the vacuum gripper of the PCB assembly pick and place machine pick up the part by. The factory had removed one of those caps, but not both. Once I removed the cap, the display board seated nice and firm. You'll know it's seated properly when you can just barely see the tips of the pins through the connector when viewed from the component side of the Giga MCU board.

We have 44 mega events coming up on the calendar, each with the chance to become a giga event if they can reach at least 3000 'will attend' logs by at least four weeks in advance. Here are the closest:

1) GCA6GW6 GeoWoodstock XX has 1676 'will attend' logs so far. 1324 needed in 91 days: 14.5 more per day.

GeoWoodstock XX has the best chance of going giga, though it needs 14.5 more 'will attend' notes per day. That's a bit steep. There's an attached chart of their progress thus far (there's only a few data points; I was feeling lazy, sorry). Things will need to pick up a bit, but it is still totally possible.

So if you want to go to a giga event, or at least have them come back, your best bet is to add a 'will attend' note to GCA6GW6 GeoWoodstock XX in Flagstaff Arizona, USA May 25th 2024, get your friends to do the same, then all come on down for an awesome time.

Everytime I need to do a meet run, I always choose my Giga, but the stamina is soooo limited, I wonder why is it made like that, for balance ? maybe in pvp ? is a slow moving giga balancing it in pvp though ? Because in pve it's a very unpleasant experience riding a super slow giga with lots of meat in inventory and with no stam.

I can pair it with an argentavis, can even do several runs in one go since I can dump the full inventory from Giga to Argy a few times, cryo the giga and back home with the argy, but why is Giganotosaur made like this. It's not making it difficult, it's making it so annoying. A lot of things in Ark is not hard but annoying, even dino's tail is annoying it causes rubberbanding, why can't their tail be ignored and let us pass thru it, but this is Giga stamina thread, why ?

Imo if for balance, it's better if it has high stamina base, so if leveled up, it will add a lot, just like it's base damage, because ppl tend to fully level up damage than anything else, even leveling up hp isn't worth it, but it's already high, giga needs a stamina boost. Does stamina potion/brew work on Giga/dino ?

Rare flower man.....go to middle of somewhere with lots of dino's, toss out giga, eat rare flower then immediately mount giga. All the everything comes to you.

Once done, hop on argy and tell giga to follow you, no stam drain and can run forever.

Hahah that works too, similar to what I do using argy as packmule, but kinda defeat the purpose of Giga being Giga, it's like the devs deliberately wanted to nerf it to the ground even to its stamina. This is why Pve and Pvp kinda needs separate development, but it's too late for that with the game near its end.

Do ppl really accept Giga being like this ? Damage is good thougn, even mutated rex probably won't come close to a bred non mutated GIga's dmg. But the stamina is so sad it needs a packmule like Argy.

Ive got my meat run Giga also leveled in speed only. Its faster than an argy and its stomping the whole time It one-shots pretty much everything anyway. I walk from my base at 50-50 to close to the beavers dams at the end of Smugglers pass at redwood to do my meat run. 3 mins or so, all the meat I need...
