Hello all,
I had applied for the students pool rooms for international master
students. After months they replied back and have offered me a berth
at Culmunnstrasse 26. Though i had applied for 11 month period they
have offered only for 4 months. I have checked on Woko website and on
google for the information. Rent is 380 CHF per month. This looks
good. But I have few doubts....I hope you people who have been there
since a year or so should be able to give some info.

1. THis Culmunnstrasse 26 is in the heart of city and very close to
ETH and Univ of Zurich. But i have heard that ETH Zurich has a new
campus too, and that is little far off from the the city center. I am
going for MSc Biology - Biochemistry, and i dont know where will my
classes be. if at the new campus then it will be problem to up and
down from culmunnstrasse.

2. These people are not giving any internet service in the rooms here.
Its like a lifeline for me..... not only for information and studies
but it will affect my communication with people back in India.

3. Since the room is only for 4 motnhs.... and that shall be over in
january end, then wud it be difficult to look for accommodation
somewhere else then, i suppose by that time most of the place would be
occupied.

Now plz suggest.... is it a good deal or not. can one get room near to
the new campus, and is internet facility generally given in
rooms...... if not what can be done for it, what would the provision
would cost.

Hi,

I have also got a room offer in Culmunnstrasse 26 but  the contract is of 8 months. I will be joining MSc. Computer Science Program so somebody please let us know whether this location suits us or not. About internet i think we can get a connection for it from the service provider in our room.

Also 3G is available there so with phone also the speed of internet would be good. Check out the swisscom website they are offering the 3G connection with new IPhone.. :) and deal looks good...

Hi Kshitiz,

I have also got the room in one of the hostels. I am surprised that still you are thinking that deal is good or not !?!??!
First of all, finding an accommodation in Zurich is not that easy (a student always looks for an inexpensive option which is even tougher) as told to me by my friends who are staying there. My friends are paying 450 CHF to 750 CHF per month.

After getting down at airport if you know where to go, what is better than that!!! Besides on ETH housing site they have clearly written that you can get accommodation only after coming here no deal can be fixed online. Even if you have get the room for 4 months it is not a bad deal. If you like the room then you can request for extension if it gets approved, good for you. If you are unable to extend or you don't want to live there then in 2 months you will be informed about the Zurich and should be able to find a suitable accommodation for yourself. People join in both the semesters and everyone lives in Zurich so I believe rooms/houses will be available throughout the year.

They have provided internet port in all the hostels and you can get the internet connection by paying some amount I believe it will be cheap.

If you have friends/relatives there who can find a suitable accommodation for you then ignore what is written above else think over it.

Ksitiz: MSc Biology Should be in ETH Hongerberg Campus. Some can be in ETH Zentrum as well. Thats the campus with is on top of a hill and about 20 mins tram journey from ETH Zentrum or Culmanstrasse. I would suggest you but monthly tram pass of zurich city.. 55 CHF for under 25 years and 75 CHF per month for those above 25. unlimited travel within zurich city. thats what i do, as i live 5 kms from ETH Zentrum.

You question

1. THis Culmunnstrasse 26 is in the heart of city and very close to
ETH and Univ of Zurich. But i have heard that ETH Zurich has a new
campus too, and that is little far off from the the city center. I am
going for MSc Biology - Biochemistry, and i dont know where will my

---Already answered

2. These people are not giving any internet service in the rooms here.
Its like a lifeline for me..... not only for information and studies
but it will affect my communication with people back in India.
--- 3-4 People share internet connection in those places.

3. Since the room is only for 4 motnhs.... and that shall be over in
january end, then wud it be difficult to look for accommodation
somewhere else then, i suppose by that time most of the place would be
occupied.
-- Common Sense: New students come to Zurich, Older ones graduate and go away :) If it still doesnt ring the bell, then just believe in God.

Now plz suggest.... is it a good deal or not. can one get room near to
the new campus, and is internet facility generally given in
rooms...... if not what can be done for it, what would the provision
would cost.
-- in 380 CHF, you wont find any other room in the heart of the city!!!

Divay: CS classes are all in Zentrum, so live 200 mts away from ur classroom. But, as u have to take multidisciplinary courses too, you would could have some classes at ETH Hongg. plus ETH CS building called IFW is 200mts down from culmannstrasse, open 24 hours only for CS students.

Hope that helps!

you are not allowed to share the rooms.
Every single house in zurich is controlled by kreisburo (local police station). Depending on the number of rooms in the house, the is the upper cap of the number of people who can stay. You have to register where you are staying at nearest keirburo, so they have all your info, from passport, addres in Zurich, India and they are the ones who hand out permit to you.

Like in my apartment, there are 2 big rooms, but only 2 people can leagally stay. In the student house rooms, only one can stay.
Some rooms are for 2 people, but then they are allotted to 2 people and not 1. Kartik and his friend shared one such room.

you can still ask Aninna Wanner on this issue

Hi.

Is it necessary to have a "rental contract of accommodation" within 8
days of arrival at Zurich, in order to apply for a Residence permit ?
Also is it 8 days or 8 "working" days ?

I will be able to apply for a RP

Also, I request those going to ETHZ and without a room in the "

you get yourself an

But I am not sure if you can apply for a room in the International

now. They had a deadline of 30th June I guess. Do it still. But also
try searching for

Through website(s) or what ? It will be hard to find an apartment to

Hi everybody

Please do not apply for rooms anymore! (it is now mentioned on the
application website that you shouldn't...). There are currently around
70 (!) people on the waiting list (for less than 50 rooms), and in
case somebody will cancel his/her reservation, we will allocate the
room to someone according on the waiting list according to our
priority list (criteria: application date, good mix of male/female
students in the flat, good mix of nationalities etc.). So the "waiting
list" is not really a "list", but rather a pool. We choose the person
who fits in best according to the criteria mentioned above (this
doesn't have to be the person on the very top of the list).

Please try the following links to find a room yourself:

www.marktplatz.ethz.ch (best student housing website for Zurich!)
www.wohnen.ethz.ch/links/index_EN

If this doesn't work, please book a room in a hostel for the first
couple of days, as it is much easier to find a place once you are here
and can meet the landlords. Some suggestions for short-term
accommodation:

Ohh so that terrifying gtalk id belonged to you :D

Dood I rejected the offer. Send me the request again coz' I don't
remember the id.

Yeah, nice plan. Why why leave out those who are not from Delhi ?
Delhi's not even half (a VERY generous assumption!) as far as Zurich
from anyone's place who's going there.

Let's plan a big get together before even a single one of us leaves
for Zurich .

What say all ?

P.S: Delhi guys, we can plan something side-by-side. :D

Hey guys,

I have found a house in Zurich. It has 3.5 rooms and cost is around
1500CHF. I think we can bargain on that. I have found a guy named
Manish who has the place. He says the place is like 20 min from the
ETh campus.

Any idea how man can live in this apartment?

Guys, so what do you think ?

Thanks

Sid

@sid

well i think tht's a pity gud deal... and I am really interested in
it. Well as far as i know generally 3-4 people are allowed in a 3.5
apartment ..that u can always check with the owner ..give me your no.
so that we can discuss over it.

Cheers
Ajay
