The fourth part, "To Be of the Party", shows Rooke's dilemma when he is ordered to participate in a punitive expedition against another Aboriginal clan, who are accused of killing and wounding several colonists. Rooke is reluctant to join the violence, as he feels a bond with the Aboriginal people and does not want to harm them. He also fears losing Tagaran's trust and friendship. He tries to avoid the conflict, but is eventually forced to make a choice between his loyalty to his country and his conscience.
The fifth part, "Antigua, 1836", reveals Rooke's fate after he leaves New South Wales. He resigns from the navy and settles in Antigua, where he works as an abolitionist and a teacher. He marries a local woman named Sarah Johnson, and has two children with her. He never forgets Tagaran or her language, and keeps his notebook as a precious reminder of their time together. He dies peacefully at the age of 73.
