All,

Just checking if any of you have experience with the triple Weber carb setup on an L28 engine.  I currently have a Holley 4bbl on my car, which in retrospect was probably not the way to go.  Thought maybe I'd consider the Webers, if they're compatible with our altitude here (~5000).  If there are other considerations I'd like to know.  Thanks.

Hi Jerry,

I have a little experience with triples. I think you need at least a bigger  them to work close to how they should. That would be 40mm triples. The chokes and jetting need to be addressed for your application as well. In a nut shell I would say that a good set of SU's is your best bet unless your engine is "built" to some extent. BTW I am in FoCo too. You should stop by some time and talk Z :)

Jim

They work great. I ran Weber 40’s for a couple of years, then switched to the 45’s. 45’s are definitely the way to go on a z...especially if you decide to do a hotter cam in the future.

I had Jeff Winter at Rallye sport tune mine on a Dyno. It runs as good at 9100 ft as it does in Denver. You’ll love it if you make the change.

Also...A set of triple side-draft carbs and a nice exhaust make make a really beautiful sound.

Hi Jerry,

I ran triples for a while on an L28 with mild cam.  The biggest issue was tuning.  I wanted to do it myself and there were no local sources of jets at a reasonable price.  I did find an ebay source in Italy, but every cycle took a few weeks for shipping and there was a lot of trial and error.  The better approach is to pick a local person with expertise and a box full of jets.  The only person I know local is Jeff Winter who is very good, but not cheap.  In the end, triples will be an expensive way to go, but if/when you get them dialed in, they are fabuluous - they look good, sound great, and make good power.  But be prepared to start a journey :)

FYI, Patrick Baxter is running them now I believe and used Jeff Winter so he may be able to chime in too.

Gerry,

I meant to type that you should probably at least have a hotter cam etc. to get them to work the way they should. I dont know how that got dropped out of my message.

Hey Jim,

OK, I kinda thought it was something like that.  My engine has higher compression pistons, but the stock cam.  I should be able to drop by for a chat one of these days.  What would be a good way to check if you're available?

Gerry,

I ran triple 40’s on my L26 engine for several years and loved them! I did my own tuning with a box full of jets, that my father had from previous VW days, and got them to run well on my own. I’m sure Jeff Winter would be a good source to help you out as well.

I did have high compression pistons and a pretty hot cam. They do look and sound great, so good luck with your install.

In a nutshell.....40s should be about right.  Yes a cam is a huge benefit.  Use SUs if you are not cammed.  Standard Chokes with 40s are good.  If you have 44s at this altitude smaller Chokes may be required.

I have 42DCOE-8's on my L28.  There are a ton of parameters (chokes, emulsion tubes, air corrector jets, etc.) which need to be optimized for your particular use case.  As Daniel pointed out the biggest issue is tuning.  You need an experienced tuner.  I recommend Jeff Winters of Rallye Sport Datsun.  You'll need some dyno time.  You need to shell out for the correct bits. I know that Jeff just listened to my car and called out the right configuration for my set-up.  It runs fine.  Once it's set you don't need to do much.  They sound great.  They look cool.  Not sure if they're worth the headache.
