Can a kind Zotonic wizard help me kill two birds with one stone?
1) Revive my site fromtheglen.com
2) Help flesh out a Cookbook diagnostic that may help others
Here's the problem:
My site fromtheglen.com went down recently. Reason unknown,
Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at fromtheglen.com.
I tried to connect through SSH, but failed.
I pinged the site, but failed:
lloyd@Reliance:~$ ping fromtheglen.com
PING fromtheglen.com (209.160.65.32) 56(84) bytes of data.
No response. Can it be a hardware or network issue?
My site is running on a remote dedicated server so I asked my ISP to reboot. Which they did. But I still can't connect.
So I unleashed ping once again:
lloyd@Reliance:~$ ping fromtheglen.com
PING fromtheglen.com (209.160.65.32) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from writersglen2.com (209.160.65.32): icmp_req=1 ttl=54 time=26.8 ms
64 bytes from writersglen2.com (209.160.65.32): icmp_req=2 ttl=54 time=27.0 ms
yada yada
Success. I was also able to log in successfully through SSH. But I still can't connect through the browser.
Perhaps I need to restart Zotonic
zotonic@fromtheglen:~/zotonic$ zotonic start
Starting zotonic zoton...@fromtheglen.com
zotonic@fromtheglen:~/zotonic$
Zotonic seems to have started just fine. But I'm still unable to connect.
Do we have a zotonic status command similar to postgres's postgreql status? This would be very helpful.
So, next, I check to see if Postgres is running:
zotonic@fromtheglen:/etc/init.d$ ./postgresql status
Running clusters: 8.4/main
It is, but I still can't connect.
Now my know-how ends.
Questions:
1) What else can I do to bring my site back up?
2) How can I flesh out this narrative to produce a useful diagnostic Cookbook item for others?
Many thanks,
LRP

FWIW, I can reach your site via
http://fromtheglen.com:8000/
So I think, it's a problem with your network (iptables?)
Best,
Michael
Maybe there is a problem with the port mapping?
Did you do that with firewall rules?
- Marc
Ah, yes. Thank you.
This is an example of the simple stuff that trips up tech-challenged folks like me. Can you help me add a paragraph or two on how to set up up iptables so I can post a Cookbook item? Or, if it's already there and I've overlooked it, please point it out and I'll include a cross-reference.
If we're successful, it will will cut down noise on the list due to Mickey-the-Dunce questions like mine.
Many many thanks,
Lloyd
Arjan
With the number of entries, it's getting more difficult to find things in Cookbook. I'm pleased with extent and scope of entries. But at some point soon we'll probably have to consider an indexing scheme. Search is fine if you know what you're looking for. But as Cookbook expands indices would really help.
Best,
Lloyd

I've changed the subject for obvious reasons.
Search is good. But, in addition, it would also help, I believe, to provide some way of grouping topics. Grouping could be done in several ways. I suggested role-based grouping to Arjan when he was in Boston:
Website Developers
Graphic Designers
Content Specialists
Programmers
Links to items that cross role boundaries could be duplicated. Redundancy is is helpful here.
Another scheme would group by function:
Getting started
Admin
Dispatch
Templates
Modules
Troubleshooting
Extending Zotonic
I don't have strong personal preferences beyond items that go together should be grouped together.
All the best,
Lloyd
I have created a new topic to continue this discussion called "Role-based Tagging of the Cookbook".
Please continue this discussion there.
Thank you.
