setting relations in a translator

Reviving an old thread -- has it become possible in the interim for import translators to set up relations between the imported objects? I have tried filling item.relations before .complete() but from the errors I am getting it seems like ._getURIObject is used in handling it, and that appears to expect an item actually existing in the library, and this is of course not the case for items being imported.
