I try my first steps on creating a plugin, but even the template make-it-red.xpi fails to install. I always get this "bla ...seams not compatible" message. I tried with (in?-) official Debain zotero built 7.0.15 and with the today available tarball, says 7.0.15, too.
I can install better-bibTex.xpi, though. Is there some config I need to enable for WEBextension based plugins (better-bibTex seams old school)? Or any other suggestions?

Which version of make-it-red did you install, exactly? There are several variants, some of them are not compatible with Zotero 7.

That link is longer accessible.

See the instructions to build make-it-red in the readme. Basically, you’ll need to clone the repository (or just download a ZIP from GitHub) and run ./make-zips.

Zotero uses the same manifest.json syntax as WebExtensions, but there’s no “old-school” vs “new-school” way to write a Zotero plugin. Better BibTeX is loaded in the same way as any other plugin. I wouldn’t recommend using it as an example if you’re writing a simple plugin, though, because it’s extremely complex and has a much more involved structure and build process than you’ll need. You might find this template helpful as a starting point.
