Internal API for Third Party App

Hi all,

I am developing an app which I want to connect to Zotero and retrieve some data. Pretty much what the Word plug-in does but in an application.

I am trying to figure out the internal API of Zotero to do things like retrieve the collections, the items, a citation, etc.

Can anyone point me to a link or a document or even to parts of the source code where I can see what sort of calls I can make to the application?
