Are there any users of Zotero whose home directories (including
zotero.sqlite) are remote?

Likely protocols: AFP, NFS, SMB.

My reason for asking: with some versions of Mac OS X (earlier than
10.5.6), I found that some aspects of some SQLite-oriented
applications tended to stop responding in the following environment:

* AFP home directory
* Sophos Anti-Virus on-access scanning enabled.

Symptoms were odd: the application did continue to run (a Force Quit
Applications dialogue would reveal no problem), but certain behaviours
within the application would not progress in the normal way. Most
noticeable when viewing the Activity window of Mail.app whilst
rebuilding an IMAP mailbox; the activity would seem endless and
ultimately, a force quit was required.

Misbehaviour was also noticeable in Safari.

(AFAIK there is some sharing of data between Apple Address Book, iCal,
Mail and Safari.)

I eventually discovered that the laziest work-around (not recommended)
was to disable on-access scanning.

The better work-around, within the constraints of Sophos, was to
exclude certain files/paths from on-access scanning.

It is some time since I reviewed (in our tracker) related issues, so
it may be that more recent versions of the AFP server, client OS,
applications and Sophos Anti-Virus are (in combination) less prone to
this problem.

Possible relevance to Zotero is:

1) SQLite in remote situations

2) without multiple users (SQLite databases in parts of the home
directory that are accessed by no more than one person)

3) multiple client processes, e.g. (a guess) some combination of two
or more applications attempting to access (read only) data from (a
guess) an SQLite database, concurrently, whilst on-access virus
protection is effective.
