Dear Les and all,

What is Good?

help me!!!
I like to learn from you

Dear Ali A. Jafarey, Les and all

Ali A. Jafarey wrote, "Righteousness is the best good."

When Ali A. Jafarey is comparing Righteousness to unRighteousnes that he can say Righteousness is best Good. Ali A. Jafarey has accepted the best Good as the basis of his Judgment about the Righteousness. He who had been created the best good, who can permit us to know Righteousness is good.

Jesus said, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.”

Good Thought, Good Word, Good Deed

What is Good and Bad/Evil?

But since God created Satan, and then Satan was found to have evil in him, one has to wonder how we could create believe with darkness in it since God has no darkness in Him.”

Good and Bad is firmly imbedded in our subconscious that we have accepted the Good and Bad as the basis of our religion and of our theories about the cosmos. It is when we are comparing things to goodness that we are able to recognize the opposite of it (evil), it is mankind that creates the good and bad (evil) in this world.

It is mankind that creates the good and bad (evil) in this world, “One’s concept of "good" is a relative term, and in fact relies upon the existance of its opposite.”

Thank you Les for joining http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goodthought/ I learned from you

Why do we Judge?

Hello All,

I'm the founder of the determinism group. Thanks for the invitation to join with you all; of course, I reciprocate the offer. As for thoughts controlling behavior: we have no evidence for that; we merely have correlation. In otherwords, what came first, the thought, or the behavior, or for that matter, the neurological sequence specific for initiating action?

In famous studies originated with neuroanatomist, Benjamin Libet, and since replicated, it has been demonstrated that the neurological "command" to behave--in Libet's experiments, this typically involved a raising of a finger--actually preceded the subject's awareness of the
deed by a few milliseconds. But Libet's findings have been used by both sides of the FW vs. Determinism debate; ironically, Libet himself is a "freewillie".

As for the "I" or "Self" initiating something, that's a bit in the domain of begging the question, since if one accepts such a definition of I or self, then one is essentially already conceding or claiming the point as fact.

Steve is right, a thought cannot initiate a thought because there must have been an initializer of that thought, and the one before that, and so on. In any event, the concept of I or self is ultimately a metaphysical one. It's no fair to mix scientifically based reasoning with terminology that is based entirely upon faith or of what merely "seems" like is going on.

With Warm, Humble, and Determined Regards,

Les

THE ZARATHUSHTRIAN ASSEMBLY

CELEBRATES

AYATHRIMA GAHANBAR, THE AUTUMNAL FESTIVAL

Ali A. Jafarey

"We announce and we perform the exalted festival of righteousness, we who observe the festivals on their days, months, the year, and the season. We announce and we perform the season's righteousness festival. We announce and we perform the Ayathrima Gahanbar of righteousness which introduces a new turn in the season and which is the mating time for domestic animals. We praise, glorify, feel happy, and celebrate the Ayathrima Gahanbar." It was with these words chanted in Avesta by Mobedya Bahram Deboo that the Autumnal Festival began at the Zarathushtrian Assembly Headquarters yesterday at noon.

"Righteousness is the best good.  It is radiant happiness. Radiant happiness comes to the person to whom righteousness is for the sake of the best righteousness.

Let us pray to Ahura Mazda.  Wise Lord, we thank You for seasons that impart changes to our life.  A life without change would be too monotonous, too boring.  We as students, teachers, and parents; we as those on summer jobs with more earnings, we as any other citizens of the land, have enjoyed the long days of summer late into its short nights.  We have had all a great time.  We are now back to our schools and work, and work to make our world an ever-fresh, ever-good to live and enjoy.

At this Ayathrima Gahanbar, we have gathered here to meet, pray, and enjoy the Autumn season.  Grant us more strength to serve You and Your creation.  Give us the true happiness which radiates to make the world around us happy.  Help us to be better citizens.  May the new season bring us soundness of body and vigor of mind. May the mellow rays of the soothing sun soothe our hearts.

We are grateful to You for all Your kindness.  We thank You, we love You, Wise Lord!”

The translation of the prayer and the significance of the festival were given by Behdin Lori Ash in English and by Behdin Fahim Shamloo in Persian. Here is what they said:

“Righteousness is the best good.

We thank You, we love You, Wise Lord!"

Next the six-year old beauty Aryana Ash recited Ashem Vohu and said the English translation from memory. The audience were thrilled. She was followed by Jafarey who gave the following explanation in English and Persian:

"Righteousness is the universal law that stands for order, evolution, progress, and perfection as ordained by the Creator for the creation. One becomes righteous by doing the right thing, at the right time, in the right place, and with the right means to obtain the right result. It means precision in every thought, words, and deed. It means constant improvement and continuous renovation. It brings enlightenment, true radiating happiness, provided that this happiness is shared with others. It then becomes righteousness for the sake of righteousness.

The above Avestan couplet frequently repeated in prayers, is popularly known by the name of 'Ashem Vohu', the two words in the beginning of the text. It is, in fact, the "main motto" entire Zarathushtrian teachings. Righteousness, the universal law of precision, is the basic principle of the Good Religion.

Zarathushtra conveniently divides mankind into two camps: Adherents of 'asha', righteousness. They are 'ashavan', the righteous who promote the human society and the living world. Followers of 'druj', harmful lie, wrong. They are 'dregvant', the wrongful. The main mission of Zarathushtra and his companions is to promote 'asha' and to eliminate 'druj'  --  to completely establish an 'ashavan' society that radiates 'ushtâ', enlightening happiness to all.”

Mr. Mehryar Mehrafarin,  Persian poet, journalist, play-writer and orator recited a part of his longest poem on how the Greater Iran was the cradle of culture and art, how she was subjugated and humiliated by the invading Arabs 1400 years ago, how she has been able to preserve and even promote her heritage, and how the people of the Iranian stock can join hands to regain their past glory.

Jafarey gave a gist of the hour-long moving recitation by memory and explained how poetry, memorized by the learned and the laity, has played in maintaining the rich heritage.

Potluck with a variety of delicacies, American, Indian and Iran, brought luck to all the tongues relishing the long table array. And live Iranian music brought more luck to the listening ears, dancing bodies and enjoying minds.

Dear Gita
dorood
Righteousness is the law that universe is created upon it. In Avestan it is called ashA vahishtA and in Persian it is ardibehesht (ordibehesht) and does mean the best law, arrangment, order, rull, and ... . It is neither good nor bad. It is just a law, order, arrangement.... The only bad or goodness is due to human being if a person learns, uses and is in accordance with the law of righteousness (ashA), to make a better, happier, more prosperous, peaceful and .... life for others, and helps him/herself and others to be more perfected and thus become closer and closer to ahoorA mazdA (God), is good. Every other thing is bad. There is no evil, devil, satan, ... outside human's mind.....

Dear Mobedyar, ushta

While I agree with much of what you say. I will point out that in the Ashem
Vohu Asha is called Vohu and thus Asha is good . Furthermore, as part of
Mazda's nature it HAS TO BE GOOD for Mazda is All Good.

Dear Ronald G Delavega
dorood
I am totally agree with you. But we should consider that goodness or badness is a human being relatively description from his or her own point of view. I mean nothing is good or bad in its own nature/entity. ashA and ahoorAmazdA are called good by avery well faithful Zoroastrian human being. You know ashem vohoo is not a gAthA-ic prayer. It is from human being side, a human being's made prayer.
As I know, the word vohoo(u) is derived from the root of to love or like or kindness (upon my persian documents).
Therefore, vohoo does mean lovely or the thing that loves others. The second point, however I think, is:" ... ashem vohoo vahishtem asti ..." . It says:" The best ashA is good".
And also:"... ushtA ahmAii hiyat ashAii, vahishtAii ashem...". It says:"... the best ashA ..."
As I can understand it tell us about good ashA, there may be a not good ashA too. Just as the Avestan word of Dozh dAnghoo (= bad knowledge person). It has become dozd that does mean thief in Persian. Knowledge is not bad in any culture, but vithout vohoo mana, it will harm others...., thus it becomes bad and not good.
As I have learned from gAthA, ashA with vohoo(u)man will be a tool that makes a person to be more useful, makes others more happy, makes world more fresh, peaceful and prosperous. In the contrary the ashA makes the person more forceful, but without vohoo(u) man the person will destroy all things and makes others unhappy.

Dear Mobedyar, ushta

While I agree with much of what you say. I will point out that in the Ashem
Vohu Asha is called Vohu and thus Asha is good . Furthermore, as part of
Mazda's nature it HAS TO BE GOOD for Mazda is All Good.

Dear Mobedyar, Ushta!

With sall due respect, the Gathas were made by a human being as well.
Zarathushtra is no god or son of god and nowhere in his Gathas does he say
that MA composed or dictated the Gathas to him. But let's not argue,
instead, if you have verses from the Gathas that say that MA composed or
dictated the Gathas to Zarathushtra post them and I will accept them.

We have so much in common why do we parse? The Ashem Vohu shows every
indication to have been composed by Zarathushtra himself . Indeed it totally
agrees with the rest of the Gathas and reveals one of the Principles to Live
by that he taught. But even if, he was not the author, these teachings are
so in harmony with what the Ashem Vohu teaches that it would not make any
difference. If the Ashem Vohu describes Asha as Vohu, are you going to say
that Asha is not Vohu? Based on what text, may iask? If the Ashem Vhohu
describes Asha as being Vahishai, are you going to say that Asha is not
Vahistai?

If you are not going to challenge the meaning of the Ashem Vohu and, in all
honesty, I cannot see how can you challenge it using the Gathas and its
teachings, then, you must accept it as being in full harmony with the
Gathas. Therefore, if you believe in what the Gathic message teaches you
must believe in what the Ashem Vohu says.

It is true that Asha has a subjective dimension, just as it has a physical
and a spiritual one. In that subjective dimension it is sometimes relative
in that what maybe Asha in one instance and circumstance and to a certain
person , might not be so in another instance and circumstance and/or to
another person.

But that is only ONE aspect of Asha. When you consider it as what it is
linguistically, and Universally, Asha is the direct equivalent of RTA and
that is the Correct Order of the Universe. In its universal sense Asha is
the Correct order of behavior that leads to Haurvatat and Ameretat. That is,
if we behave according to Asha , we a will d eliminate druj and reach
Haurvatat and Amereta, as well as, the Blessed Abode of the Most Wise.

Independently of the Ashem Vohu, without even mentioning it, this can be
easily established by the Gathas Because when Zarathushtra talks about how
we can all achieve Haurvatat he talks about such things as 'Delivering Druj
into the hands of Asha '. He tells us to behave according to Vohu Manah
because it is is that which discerns Asha, etc. There are many texts that
allude to this Asha's central role as the standard of what is Good
Universally and applicable to all. The Divine Standard which , if followed,
will lead us to the Abode of Song

Just a few questions , Mobedyar. Is there a UNIVERSAL GOOD, something that
is good at all times and for all persons? Is there ever a time that we ought
to murder? Manipulate others for our benefit? Live our lives by bad
thoughts words and deeds? Is there any tme that we ought to live by
cheating, lying, stealing abusing, enslaving and putting down other living
beings? Is there any time that raping a child or commiting genocide is
good? Are these things EVER good?

But what is the standard that if followed will make us NOT do these things
EVER? I have but one answer and its the same one that Asho Zarathushtra gave
in the Gathas. The same one which is enclosed in the Ashem Vohu. Asha is
good, it is the Highest and Best, it is Ushta... If not with Asha, with what
and where does Zarathushtra teach another standard for Universal Goodness?
Or are you saying he does not teach such a standard?

May we always walk in the Thinking that Loves Good, which discerns the Right
Order and leads to peace and Ma's kingdom on this Earth and in all
Creatures. May it be so!

With All Ushta and Love

Dear Ronald
dorood (=be peaceful and healthy)
I am agree with most of your points. It is just correct that ashem vohoo is in accordance with gAthA. The thing that I tried to say, is the thing that ashA is law/rule/ order... and is not good or bad as we describe evil /devil or goodness. All your examples are related to human being benefits. Science is good or bad? Upon gAthA the hudA, uses the science and knowledge in useful way, but dozhdA uses the same science or knowledge in harmful way.
In 32-9: ... bad teacher take away good mind from people ....
In 32-11: ... the person destroys the life that prevents ashAoono (the person who are in accordance with ashA) from vahishtAt manabgho (good mind) ...
Dear Ronald, if you consider in ashem vohoo vahishtem asti... it is mentioned that the best ashem is good. ooshtA ahmAii heyat ashAii vahishtaii ashem. It is mentioned once again that the best ashA will result in ooshtA.

In hAt-e 29, for example: ashoo Zartosht is described as a wise and knowledgeable person, but completeness is given by God to teach other people.... It is a fact that human being's own knowledge is imcomplete and relative. Every day some things are known that change the level of human's knowledge, but the knowledge of gAthA is at least accepableby nowadays scientists, however in training human being, how to use his/her abilities the best.
It proves that this part of science was not initiated by ashoo Zartosht himself. Nowadays students know many more than ancient very excellent and genius science initiating scientists. But nowadays scientist just can understand the teachings of ashoo zartosht more better. They cannot say anything more or better than ashoo Zartosht's teachings. It proves that hese teachings are not from human being side, because it has taken some thousands of years that the level of human being own findings, science and knowledge reach to the extent to be able of understanding and then confirming the ashoo Zartosht's teachings.
