In the science news department, this is rather important from a
scientific stand point. If the impact occurs scientists can observe it
to study the effects of asteroid collisions on Earth-like bodies. As
the study of Near Earth Objects continues to find tens of thousands of
potentially dangerous objects in Earth's path its is more important than
ever to understand what happens when an asteroid impact rocky planets
like Mars .... and Earth.
