Surname or topic sorting?

I'm not sure if this was deliberate, or the alternative I'm about to
suggest too complicated but, while I really like the idea of Zoomi,
the 'sections' are too broadly defined for me. If I was in a book
shop (atmittedly in England), the politics section, for example, would
frequently have subdivisions, for example, by country. At the moment,
the entirety of a large topic section organised by author's surname is
somewhat frustrating and moves the experience of using Zoomi further
towards the amazon experience than a bookshop experience.

I definitely agree.  In fact, I'm working on that problem right now.  I'm first building an interface so that I and other users can put un-categorized or mis-categorized books into their correct categories.  The second step will be to use that information to layout the store by sub-categories, like you suggest.
