Frankly, zoomed out mode is completely unusable. What you should do
is overlay the section names in large letters over each section
block. Then when you zoom in the detail appears. Think about google
maps when you zoom out and just see country names. Or, when you first
enter a bookstore, you look for the section names at the tops of the
shelves until you "drill down" into the subject you want.

I personally don't want to scroll through a bunch of romance titles to
find the section I want. Yes, I know I can search, but that defeats
the point of browsing, doesn't it?

It definitely could be better.  I have plans to add an overlay much like you describe.

There is a way to get directly to the categories though.  Just click on the 'Categories' link to the top-left and you'll be able to navigate directly to the section you want.
