Would be cool to drag books and drop them on the shopping cart. I keep
wanting to do that because the moving book images suggest I should be
able to.

I'd like to support that, but I'm not sure how I can without interrupting the dragging experience. Any ideas?

Could you use shift-click or alternate mouse buttons to pick up a book
rather than moving the shelves?

Possibly, but that sounds like something you have to teach people to do, rather than something they can discover for themselves. Sometimes obvious has to trump usability for experts. :-/

Well, how about a small check box or shopping cart icon on or near
each book? You could select lots of books pretty quickly that way.
