I have successfully imaged all but a handful of originals in my possession. These disks are confirmed working on my original hardware but will not produce working G64s in Vice 3.1. Before I give up, I was hoping if someone could tell me if it makes any difference that the 1571 I am using (SRQ, not parallel) has a JiffyDOS ROM in it. I don't want to go changing it unless I know it could make a difference.  I didn't think it would, since I know custom code is being run for the imaging process, but I figured I should check. Thanks.

Which program did you use to dump your disks?

nibread? and how are you trying to create the G64 files? nibconv?
can you see the dir in i.e. Dirmaster (win program from Style)

I know nibread doesn't work with SpeedDOS on 1541 drives.

Could I suggest testing the G64 also in other emulators, such as the CCS64? It could very well be Vice that doesn't work properly for you ...

Yes, as it turns out, the images are fine. VICE was simply unable to work with these few. I actually remastered a few of these with success using real hardware.

Also, I got confirmation that the JiffyDOS ROM is irrelevant, which is what I expected.

Interestingly, even my 1541 Ultimate II+ was incapable of properly handling the images.

We are looking at support of functionality that is undocumented as its outside of the indented use. Deliberate errors and a lot of other stuff. A number of then protection methods cannot be replicated using a standard drive. For that you need SuperCardPro or KryoFlux.

Stuff that depend on where on the track things are is impossible to replicate on the native equipment. A PC drive uses the synkhole to know where on the disk it is reading it's stuff from. The 1541 does not have a sync hole reader so if a sector is at 12, 3 or 8 o clock cannot be determined. If you protection uses say the synk from track 35 sector 1, and then bumps to track 36 for the sector data, then you cannot replicate that on a 1541. A copy using a PC drive would place the sectors so that the sectors are lined up in position on the track. A 1541 couldn't.

You might want to send Gideon a copy of those G64's to test against the 1541 Ultimate II(+).
