Hello,
I have been trying to get a working copy of WordStar4.0 for about a year.
So far, Have failed in every attempt.
I've tried to copy .d64 and .d81 files to disks with no success!
My attempts were using 1581 for the .d81 and 1571 for the .d64.
They show [Fatal] can't open source.

imgcopy -d 1581 -ts2 --no-warp WordStar40.d81 8

uploading drivecode 9

[Fatal] could not access imagefile: WordStar40.d8

[Fatal] can't open source

Is there some special place that I need to put the source file in?

Thank you,

Joe

Is this really a literal copy of the output? Does it really say
"WordStar40.d8"? Without the "1" at the end of "d81"?

Regards,
Spiro

I’d want to know if this was on Windows, Mac, or Linux. Maybe it’s a permissions problem on the .d81 file or folder or an incorrect path. The latter would be if the file WordStar40.d81 is not in the current folder where you’re typing the command or it’s named something slightly different.

Also, you shouldn’t have to specify the drive type (-d) and the “8” as destination drive doesn’t seem to match the "uploading drive code 9” message.

Unfortunately, it is needed to add the "-d 1581": https://github.com/OpenCBM/OpenCBM/issues/89

But you are right, 8 and 9 are suspicious. That's why it would be good
to have a literal copy of the commands (or a screen shot).

Hi Joe (and group),

I associate the word “WordStar” with CP/M. Are you trying to copy a CP/M disk formatted as MFM by chance (rather than CBM native GCR)? The 1571 can read those, in CP/M mode (or via special commands sent to the drive). There was, back in the day, a C-128 program called “Big Blue Reader” that made copies of MFM disks… Not sure how digital image files can be made. I imagine someone else on the list might know.

Regards,

I just tried it a few minutes ago and the following is the result:

imgcopy -d 1581 -ts2 --no-warp WordStar40.d81 8

uploading drivecode 9

[Fatal] could not access imagefile: WordStar40.d81

[Fatal] can't open source

Switched 1581 over from 8 to 9

imgcopy -d 1581 -ts2 --no-warp WordStar40.d81 9

uploading drivecode 9

[Fatal] could not access imagefile: WordStar40.d81

[Fatal] can't open source

Swapped out 1581 for 1571

imgcopy -d 1571 cpmxtra.d64 8

[Fatal] invalid drive or image type

d64copy cpmxtra.d64 8

[Fatal] could not stat cpmxtra.d64

[Fatal] can't open source

in all cases  [Fatal] can't open source.

I'm getting very tired.   :-(

this suggests to me that you don't have the file "WordStar40.d81" in the correct directory.
when you run the command, the file has to be in the right place,
I'd copy the file to the directory where you are running the imgcopy from and try it again.

the errors "could not stat" "could not access" "could not open"
all point to the files not being in the correct location.

This is a C64 user group, not a Mac user group,

Perhaps you could check out some of the Mac User groups - there are plenty
Just google for Mac User Groups or such...

Here are a few to get you started...

Do a CTRL + click in finder on the folder where your image is located.
This will open up the context menu.

Now, use "New Terminal at folder". This will open up a terminal that is
at the right location.

You can list the directory by issuing "ls" (without the quotation
marks), it should show your d81 file. If there are too many files, you
can also try "ls WordStar*" (again, without the quotation marks).

If your file is shown with "ls", try again with imgcopy.

Hope that helps,

Hey Joe,

Not a Mac... but similar... I just tested this on my Linux (Ubuntu) laptop, imaging the WordStar D81 I found on zimmers.net and didn't have any issues.  I have a ZoomFloppy attached to a 1581 drive.

I don't know if I can post screenshots to this mailing list... but here is what I did.  I have the 'WordStar40.d81' file in my home directory in the 'cbm' folder.

I'm going to pull out one of my C128's to test the WordStar floppy.

Hope this helps.

Spiro/Raj W.

Thank you for your help!
Got it copied and took it down to my C=128 for a test drive.
Seems to  work as it should. But, I need to learn how to use it.

This is great news!  I don't think I ever learned WordStar, my dad had an  Epson QX-10, so we used Valdocs for our CP/M word processing. :)

Thanks!

Did you try it out on your C128?
I think I need a manual to be able to use it!
