TheFall of Troy (Italian: La caduta di Troia) is a 1911 Italian silent short film directed by Giovanni Pastrone and Luigi Romano Borgnetto.[1] It is the first known cinematographic adaptation of Homer's epic poem, the Iliad.

600 meters long and projected without interruption in half an hour of show,[3][4][5] The Fall of Troy did not take too long to be appreciated, especially at international level. The success achieved by the film, in fact, was crucial in bringing Italian Film to international prominence.[6] In Italy, however, it did not receive any particular acclaim, but in the rest of Europe [7][2][8] and in the United States it was received with great enthusiasm.[9][10] The Fall of Troy made foreign audiences aware of and appreciate the exploits of the nascent Italian cinema.[11][12]

A critic of the New York Dramatic Mirror in April 1911 wrote: this spectacular and very interesting film demonstrates, from the dramatic point of view, to what heights the art of cinema can reach. The sets embrace a real city and throughout the film an enchanting depth of perspective is maintained, through which an entire army of citizens and soldiers can be seen swarming in dense ranks. In the scenes of the destruction of Troy, one realizes that he is facing an incomparable production of great beauty and multiple artistic merits. " [13]The Moving Picture World (another New York newspaper) also wrote: The question that is heard everywhere: Have you seen The Fall of Troy? gives this great and spectacular production the seal of the film of the week. " [14]

Directed and written by Wolfgang Petersen and David Benioff, respectively, Troy is a 2004 epic historical war movie with an ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Orlando Bloom, Eric Bana, and Sean Bean. The storyline is derived mainly from Homer's Iliad, narrating the ten-year-long Trojan War in merely two weeks, concentrating on the dispute between Agamemnon and Achilles during the ninth year. Watching on as the Greek forces led by Achilles overrun the city of Troy, defended by Hector's Trojan troops, the end of this movie (the sack of Troy) does not follow that of Homer's original tale but comes instead from Quintus Smyrnaeus' Posthomerica. This cinematic masterpiece was produced in Malta, Mexico, and Britain's Shepperton Studios.

Troy was a commercial success, earning $497 million worldwide during its release and ranking as the 60th highest-grossing movie ever. Despite this, it was met with mixed reviews; some applauded its entertainment value and Brad Pitt's performance, while others criticized its storyline deviation from Homer's Iliad. The movie was nominated for Best Costume Design at the 77th Academy Awards and ranked 8th in global box office hits for 2004.

Worldwide, Troy grossed a jaw-dropping $497.4 million - of which $133.4 million came from the US and Canada and the rest, $364 million, accrued from other countries - solidifying its spot in the top grossing films of 2004 along with Spider-Man 2, The Passion of the Christ and Shrek 2. With an estimated production cost of $185 million, it was one of the most expensive movies of its time. Premiering out of competition at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival, it opened to solid figures - taking home an impressive $46.9 million in its first weekend alone - only falling to second place with a still healthy $23.9 million in its second week at the box office.

In 2004 the acclaimed epic film Troy was filmed in numerous locations worldwide, with the majority of scenes being captured on Malta, a Mediterranean island located off the Italian coast. Agamemnon agreed to help, aware that conquering Troy would grant him control over the Aegean Sea. Odysseus (Sean Bean), King of Ithaca, was sent by Agamemnon to convince Achilles (Brad Pitt) to join them. After consultation with his mother, Thetis (Julie Christie), Achilles ultimately chose to fight, despite being aware that death awaited him - for the promise of eternal glory.

The temple ruins at 'Phtia,' where Odysseus asks Achilles and Patroclus to join the attack on Troy while they practice swordplay, was constructed on the cliffside at Mellieha. Upon Hector's (Eric Bana) and Paris (Orlando Bloom)'s return to Troy, King Priam (Peter O'Toole) warmly welcomed Helen (Diane Kruger) yet still prepared for war. During her ride through Troy's streets, Helen felt a sense of dread, as if she didn't belong in the city.

Troy's streets and grand square were constructed on a ten-acre location that used to be Fort Ricasoli, a military compound from the 17th Century located at the south entrance of Valletta's Grand Harbour in Malta. Fort Ricasoli is an iconic military fort in Malta's Grand Harbor. Fort Ricasoli can be easily reached by car or public transport. By car, take Highway 24 to Kalkara and take the road leading towards the fort. Alternatively, you can take bus routes 162, 221, 224, or 225 from Valletta to reach Kalkara. From there, it is a short walk to the fort's entrance.

With the assistance of Achilles (Brad Pitt) and his Myrmidons, the Greeks eventually managed to overtake the Trojan Beach. Consequently, Achilles pillaged the temple of Apollo, claiming Briseis (Rose Byrne), a priestess and cousin of Paris (Orlando Bloom) and Hector (Eric Bana), as a captive.

The best way to reach Ghajn Tuffieha Bay is by car. Take Highway 24 from Valletta and drive toward the town of Mellieha. Once you reach Mellieha, follow the signs directing you toward the bay. Alternatively, you can take bus routes 2 or 4 from Valletta to get to Ghadira Bay, located close to Ghajn Tuffieha. From there, it's a short walk along the coastline to get to your destination.

The Greeks and Trojans met outside of Troy's walls. During a peace negotiation, Paris (Orlando Bloom) suggested a one-on-one duel between him and Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson) for Helen (Diane Kruger) and the city's safety. Agamemnon (Brian Cox), knowing the plan was to take over the city regardless, agreed. Menelaus had managed to wound Paris but was eventually slain by Hector (Eric Bana), who violated combat laws to save his brother. Agamemnon then commanded the Greeks to overwhelm the outnumbered Trojans.

The beach scenes and the walls and gates of "Troy" were filmed in Paraiso Escondido, near Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, located on the southern tip of Baja California, approximately 800 miles south of the USA border. From La Paz, take Highway 19 towards Santa Fe and then turn south onto Highway 18 to reach Paraiso Escondido. Alternatively, you can also take a bus from Los Cabos International Airport to your destination in Paraiso Escondido.
