influential dogs

Bonnie,
Over 12 years ago in PA, you took the time to discuss pedigrees with
me. At that time, there were some Borzoi that, in your opinion, had a
great influence on Borzoi that coursed well. Can you refresh my memory
as to who those dogs were please?

successful ASFA lure coursing Borzoi and discovered that Windrift
Kindred Spirit had sired more lure coursers than any of the dogs being

Ariel Duncan bred her Zorya to him and I bred Darkness to him and there
are descendents from both of those breedings that are excellent

Windrift Kindred Spirit is behind both of my girls. In Ana's (Krestovskaja
Anastacia) pedigree, he was bred to Majenkir Rian Palantiri. In Chant's
(Rosehill Secret Melody) he was bred to Silkenswift Pye's Dark Design.

Both of my girls do love to run. :-)

Most of my dogs that lure course(d) do have Kindred Spirit somewhere if they
are descendents of Bonnie's stuff but I have a number of dogs with
performance titles sans KS in their pedigree, what most of them have in
common is several Windhound ancestors ( and some Kristull too)

No, Katya and Kubei are out of Dawn Hall's Tamar and Laura Hyatt's
Marche. Marche's dam is a descendant of Kindred Spirit through Lauar
Hyatt's foundation bitch Am Can Ch Andvell Sara Borgia, who was a
grandaughter of Kindred Spirit. On both sides of their pedigree they
have Insight (combinining Laba, etc, even a bit of Windhound) plus
there is Stillwater on both sides. I don't know that Kindred Spirit
is much of an influence but he is back there. . .

My feeling is that the factors that give the psychological basis of
lure coursing interest are inherited and the inheritance is not
terribly complicated and that most of the factors are recessive to lack of
lure coursing interest so that once one gets dogs with lure coursing
interest and breeds them to dogs of similar mind, then a majority of the
pups will lure course. I think that dogs that lure course have to have and
enhanced chase interest, like the puppy play chase interest, or
artificial prey substitutes are boring.

It has long been my hope that people would select for lure coursing
minded dogs from many lineages so that there would be no genetic
bottleneck associated with breeding for coursing.

In my experience it takes around 3 generations of intense selection - that
is using dogs with great focus on both sides of the pedigree - not
'making excuses' such as 'she coursed until someone ran her off the
field, etc'.

In my experience really focused dogs are basically maniacs for the
plastic bag and I have even had one crash into another and break a
shoulder and still want to run once recovered. This is not to say that
such maniac behavior is otherwise sane. <grin>
