this occured when i flew in from boston, nathan wa lving in chicago and
zachary drove down from wi. i have no idea what the impetus was, but
we hung out at nates for the weekend. at the time he was dating liz,
his last girlfriend before coming out. i recall getting really drunk
and walking over to her house one night and back. we walked along the
beach and it was winter, chilly, but not terrible. we walked through
st.paul univ, a school i rejected for my masters. we went to some jazz
club one night and sat at the bar and got drunk. there was a no
smioking policy at the behest of the performers. afterward we took the
train home,, waiting for that train was fucking cold. i actually
recall a drunk dialing of my ex-wife andrea, oddly enough it was the
last time i ever called that number, i think i tried like a year later
and she had gotten rid of that phone. and she is no longer in my phone
book, considering i still have the number of a guy in new orleans who
wanted to buy a painting that mark gleicher and i were working on, but
he didn't once it was completed, it is remarkable that i have gotten
rid of the ex-wife's #. i believe the weekend kicked off at a mexican
resturant where we drank a fair amount and listened to some musician.
i recall disliking him and debating with zachary who thought he was
entertaining (maybe talented, i'm not sure, ask zach). there was also
the night that zach and i, without nate (no idea why) went out to
dinner at some italian restuant and he was talking about what a drag it
was to be living in eau claire and that he really wanted to move to
chicago, i recall thinking he should just do it, and i said so. but
nothing came of it, he just bought a house in eau claire and nate is
back in the southwest and i in alaska (on my way to some city, nyc,
bos, san diego??-we'll see where the phd opportunity and money is) i
remember that conversation with zachary and looking back i am struck by
how real and honest it was, there are so few moments in life that are
that authentic, it was great, i will remember the impression of it for
a long time (probably untill my death erases it).

that was the time that i was gone and christine (my then girlfriend,
now fiance) called to report that my apartment had flooded. she and
tom, my landlord cleaned it up before i returned and he reimbursed me
for stuff that i lost in the flooding, he really was the best landlord
and one of the greatest people i have ever encountered. that means
that this weekend occured while i was working as an assistant manager
at eastern mountain sports and christine was working at aventis
pharmacuticals,

i think we had a several bottles and two cases of beer that nate had
picked up at costco, with father harris??

I am enjoying reading your rememberances...I'll post some of my own soon enough. I just need to gather the mental energy to mine my mind. Ya know when I was a kid and into early adulthood I used to think I could remember everything that had ever happened to me. I mean everything. Well, that dellusion has been shattered!!! Musta been the drugs!! ZZZZZ

that notion that you held, was alsoo something in my head, but i have
been slipping faster than you, so i am more accustumed to making notes
(no pun intended). I look forward to your thoughts. Is the format
clear and agreeable. I think it will be great to just have these
three guys rambeling on about shit that they have done, and then to
pull from it and make a piece..... well you can see where i'm going
with that. well maybe not, but neither can i. it seems the other
idea wasn't taking to well and this just came up in our phone
conversation and it was like, hell yes!!

mikke budge!! unreal. can't wait to catch up with her

the resturant where zacharey and i ate... i wanna riff there for a
moment. we sat in a booth, plastic table covering and quite tasteful
if gaudy decor. there wer pictures, of persons, now since forgotten,
and neon in the window. 50 years back it would have had candles at
each table. it was the kind of place where you feel at home, if you
are from the midwest, and we are. it was comfortable and mildly
classy, and we relaxed into a conversation. It was intimate and
enjoyable, it was one of the few times that i felt i had advice for my
friend zachary. he was grasping for something, getting somewhere, and
i felt that i had a bit of somewhere to share. i don't remember why
nate was not there, but i do remember that we had a nice chat about his
place in life and great it was that he was making a go of singing in
chicago, post schooling, that always feels like the scariest time, the
just out of school and wondering if you have any relevance to the
world. well nate did and does and it was impressive. i remeber
walking back after dinner and stopping at a cd store, i was looking at
zorn cds and zach was telling me how they were hit or miss. at that
time i did not know his music and thought it all must be out there and
inspiring. i have since heard the rediculous albums, the ones that
sound like bad pop albums and that is not what zorn does well in my
opinion, he is good at the out there stuff, the game pieces, and the
screaming singer and the porn sound tracks. the resturant transported
us to a time, an era... it was as if gangsters were common and we were
in a film noiar, a mist settled in and the dark obliterated the last 60
years of progress. only the neon beacons from bars let you know that
the something had happened, but in the resturant we were sheltered from
that. or so, my impression is.
