NO.11 国际类 235 F

11. "All nations should help support the development of a global
university designed to engage students in the process of solving the
world's most persistent social problems."

Time: countless; words: no need to count...

A global university supported by all countries, engaging students in
the procedure of handling the most complicated social problems
worldwide, is somehow difficult to be developed. Yet, by weighing the
pros and cons, efforts shall be taken to overcome the hardship of
establishing such a campus, in that it can offer multi-dimensional
approaches to heal the world.

Launching a ambitious plan like that may encounter enormous problems,
to list some, college vision, funds, location, cultural and religious
confliction, etc,any of which can arouse endless arguments throughout
the world. Albeit these problems take time to cope with, it’s worth
the effort. With international eyeshot and experience from its
members, the global university will not only assist in solving the
world’s most persistent social problems, which may share resemblance
in different countries and culture, but also lay solid foundations for
the cooperation and understanding of the world’s future generations to
help eradicate the origins of these headache.

Basically, many persistent social problems, to name a few, poverty,
crime, violence, drugs, etc, share a great deal similarities and to
some extent differ that of different countries and culture. For
instance, poverty can be related to poor social mobility and unequal
chances in many developing countries, or may result from racialism and
discrimination in some developed ones. Through analyzing the
similarities and the differences of these problems collected from
diverse countries and culture, a global university mentioned above can
serve as a platform to conduct wider and deeper research on them,
ending up with both widely-accepted principles and specifically-
effective measures, which can hardly be achieved by any university
from a single nation.

Furthermore, talented students and knowledgeable professors from all
over the world are certain to possess diverse sights and experience.
When solving social problems, these viewpoints and knowledge
successful in one country can be applied to handle the problems in
similar countries. For example, aided by others, the adaption of
social welfare system in Denmark can be applied by a Danish student in
the amelioration of that in Norway, as well as other north European
countries due to their resemblance. This fruitful resource could be of
great value that none of the local universities can match.

More important, such a global university provide opportunities for the
leaders of the future (its students probably) from different countries
to sit by the same table, to share same opinions of a certain issue,
to hear voices of disagreement, and more important, to be trustworthy
teammates. This process of exchanging viewpoints, learning to listen
and to respect, rather than to ignore other’s claim and to conflict,
improve student’s interpersonal relationship and understanding, thus
smooth the religious and cultural gap and release the hostility
between them, eventually their people and nations, which have been
proved to be the origins of a great many international social
problems. Optimistically, if such atmosphere of esteem, tolerance and
understanding can be built on this global campus, the whole world may
anticipate hopefully the bright future of mankind.

To draw a conclusion, given that the difficulties of developing a
global university containing worldwide students and professors are
taken into conscientious consideration and properly coped with, such a
great accomplishment can make unique contributions to managing the
world’s most long-lasting and difficult problems with varieties of
methods. Gladly, I will be looking forward to that historical day, if
this proposal can be responsibly and prudently realized.

14.The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb
Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.

"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more
interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey
conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied
with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And
locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the
Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb
Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the
variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

1. The argument falsely assumes that consumers who are dissatisfied
with fresh vegetables in supermarket are likely to grow their own
vegetables instead.

2. The argument depends on an unconvincing supposition that the
national levels of satisfaction with store-bought vegetables could
reflect the level of a particular area.

The arguer fails to provide any information about what fraction of
consumers purchase vegetables from supermarkets.

3. The situation at one certain news stand does not necessarily prove
that people in this area are fond of gardening.

We do not know the content and circulation of the magazine, thus the
fact that the magazine has sold out three months in a row does not
automatically indicate that large portion of people in this area are
interested in planting vegetables themselves.

4. The arguer doesn’t take the possible cost of the proposed action
into consideration.

words:440; time:30mins;(amending time excluded)

The conclusion drawn by the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center that
consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own
vegetable, supported by a national survey and observation of the local
Village News stand, appears to be grounded at first glance.
Nonetheless, both the evidences of national and local survey cannot
necessarily help to reach the conclusion due to lack of
representativeness, fallacious causal relationship and incomplete
information in the argument.

First and foremost, the owner falsely assume the fact that many
consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables
available in supermarkets may lead to rising interest in growing their
own vegetables. These consumers may choose alternatives such as buying
vegetables from local farmers or urging the supermarket to improve the
quality. After all, it's neither convenient nor feasible to plant
vegetables for food, especially for those who've possibly been
costumed to consuming commercial vegetables.

Even though the causal relationship above does stands, the national
survey cannot be of any indication to the situation in a particular
suburban area. Perhaps the local people are so content with the
quality of vegetables provided by the markets that choosing to
expanding varieties of vegetable seeds will lead to a complete
failure. Meanwhile, since the arguer doesn't give detailed fraction of
dissatisfied customers, barely can we come to the conclusion that the
'many people' can be sufficiently influential portion.

What's more, the statistics at Village News stand is not a
representative sample for the entire town. Albeit the magazine has
sold out three months in a row, without knowing the content and
circulation of the magazine, hardly can the arguer assume that
considerable number of consumers in the town enjoy gardening and are
eager to enjoy planted vegetables instead of those from local
supermarkets.

In addition, without further information on the cost and profit of the
proposed action, the arguer fails to claim that by greatly expanding
the variety of vegetable seeds they stock for gardeners this coming
spring, they can embrace an augment in profits. Maybe only certain
kinds of vegetables are preferred by local people, with the
possibility that expanding the varieties of vegetables may turn out to
be an awful venture eventually.

In conclusion, without establishing causal relationship between the
fact in the national survey and the desire of planting vegetables on
local consumers' own, lacking representative samples of the magazine
sales as well as the countrywide investigation, the arguer's
conclusion is not sounded from bottom to top. To strengthen his or her
point of view, it would be better if the owner can build a convincing
causal relationship and offer other samples compelling enough.
