Changing your Wi-Fi password is a simple security practice you can complete in four easy steps. Regular password updates protect sensitive data, prevent unauthorized access, and help safeguard against hackers. Get Norton Secure VPN to secure your private data and information.

Firmware is the software in your router that controls its functionality and performance. Software updates enhance security, and router manufacturers periodically release updates to address security vulnerabilities and protect against router hacking, so take advantage of these updates for the best defense.

Your Wi-Fi router's name, also known as the service set identifier (SSID), is the unique identifier that appears when you search for available wireless networks. Changing your Wi-Fi router's name is a simple yet effective way to personalize your home network and make it easily recognizable among other wireless networks.

Check for a sticker on the back or bottom of your router that will list the credentials. If you changed the default credentials, you can perform a factory reset that will restore the original settings.

Most routers have a small reset button located on the back or bottom of the device. It is often recessed to prevent accidental resets, so use a pin or clip end to press the button.

Using different passwords for your accounts will help prevent unauthorized access. If one of your accounts gets compromised, having different passwords helps block hackers from accessing your other accounts.

An effective practice to having a strong password is to create a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. This combination makes them more resilient against automated tools that attempt to crack passwords. Moreover using a password manager can greatly assist in managing passwords while keeping them robust and secure.

You can access your router's configuration page through your web browser on your computer connected to your network. If you can't connect top the Wi-Fi because you don't know the password, you can use an Ethernet cable to connect your computer directly to the router. This will bypass the need for the Wi-Fi password.

Typical router addresses are 192.168.1.1, 192.168.0.1, 192.168.2.1, or 10.0.1.1 for Apple. Enter this address into your browser's address bar. If this doesn't work then you can press and hold the Reset button on your router for about 30 seconds to reset it to factory default settings. Then you can look up the default address for your router model and enter it into your browser.

Every router requires a username and password before you can access the interface. In many cases the default username is "admin" and the password is "admin" or "password". Of course this varies from model to model, so you should check your model online to see your exact login information. Most D-Link routers have a default user name of admin and password of admin or blank.

If you've changed the login in the past and since forgot it, or received a second hand router and the previous owner didn't reset it, you'll need to press and hold the Reset button on the router for about 30 seconds. This will reset the settings to default, allowing you to log in with the default username and password. Beware - this will erase existing configuration data on the router.

Once you are logged into your router, you will need to find the Wireless section of the configuration page. The exact name varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, but generally you are looking for a "Wireless" or "Wireless Settings/Setup" tab or button.

Look for the box labelled "Password", "Passphrase" or "Shared Key". You can enter your new password into this box. Some routers will ask that you type the password again to make sure that you entered it correctly.

Try to create a strong password that would be difficult if not impossible to guess. It should not be related to anything personal, and should include a liberal amount of numbers, random cases, and special characters such as "!", "$" and "#". A strong password is usually at least 8 characters long.

There are three main types of wireless encryption: WEP, WPA, and WPA2. For the most secure network, you should be using WPA2. You may run into issues connecting older devices, however, in which case you could switch to WPA or WPA/WPA2. Selecting WEP is NOT recommended, as WEP encryption is very easy to break.

Once you have updated your new password, click the Apply or Save button. The router will then process the change, at which point any devices currently connected would be disconnected. After your settings are changed, you can connect to your wireless network using your new password.

Without a password, anyone can connect to your Wi-Fi network. This means that strangers can hog the network, reducing your internet speed. In the worst-case scenario, they can even exploit your devices to install malware and steal sensitive information.

Before you can change a router's password or name, you need to know its IP address. This is what you'll enter in your internet browser (Google Chrome, Firefox, or Microsoft Edge) to access the configuration page.

If the IP address written on your router doesn't work, it could mean that the manufacturer or internet service provider has changed it recently. Luckily, you can easily find a router's IP address using your computer or phone.

2. Log into your router using its username and password. The default username and password are often admin or userAdmin. If they don't work, check your device, as they can be written on its back, side, or bottom. You can also contact the router's manufacturer or your internet service provider to find out what they are.

Your router's default name or, to use the more technical term, Service Set Identifier (SSID) will be something generic, but you can change it to something easily identifiable and more meaningful, like Smith's Home Wi-Fi.

5. Click Save or Apply to save the changes. You'll then see the Wi-Fi name you entered appear in the list available networks on your computer or phone.

If you can't remember your Wi-Fi password, you can bypass the password requirement by connecting to the router using an ethernet cable. Then, follow the steps mentioned above to reset your Wi-Fi password.

If you don't have an ethernet cable, you can reset the router. Doing this will return it to its factory default settings, meaning the current Wi-Fi password will be erased, along with the router's password.

1. Press the Reset button on your router. It will be inside a pin-sized hole usually located at the back of the router with the words Reset next to it. To reach inside and press the button, use a pin, paper clip or any long and narrow object that can fit through the hole.

3. Enter the default username and password for your router. The manufacturer will place this information somewhere on the back, or underneath the device. If you can't find it, contact the manufacturer.

Assuming you mean you changed your router and need to change the WiFi login on the devices, you must hit the setup buttons and go through the setup process again to reset the WiFi. You DO NOT need to delete the devices from the app, so their settings will all persist.

Thank you for the info.
I have reset one camera using your info.
I had to change my password and now I must re-install EVERY camera I have.
ATTENTION Wyze: Please make this an easy change on the Wyze to be entered ONCE for all my cameras.
Thanks.

This seems to be a 1 year old subject but it is still actual. There should be an easy way to update the password on the app if the network password has been changed without having to go thru the setup again.

This morning, all of a sudden, my wifi password got changed without my knowledge. Obviously, the first thought would be if someone else changed, but that is not possible at all, as I was the only one using my WiFi.

I read on the internet that it could have been a glitch or a bug or my router does this once in a while to reset password. But I have been using this router for years and I have never encountered this issue before. That leads me to think if I have been hacked. I connected the router via ethernet cable and tried to change my password at routerlogin.net, but it says the admin creds are wrong. I don't remember changing it, It was the default password. But I couldn't get in.

I pushed the reset button in my router and my wifi password worked. I'm not sure, because I read, on pressing the reset button, everything's reset, and so my wifi password should be the one on the router sticker and the admin creds must be reset to default. None of it happened. My WiFi password was set back to my current Wifi password which didn't work few minutes back, and the admin creds is still unknown.

First of all, we do apologize for the inconvenience of not getting back to you immediately due to the backlog in the system. Do you still have the issue? If yes, have you updated the firmware to the latest?

Hi, my netgear account password keeps getting changed every 2 weeks or so. Is there a chance someone is trying to hack my wifi? I've changed the password everytime it logs me out of my netgear account on my iphone app. Everytime i get logged out it won't let me use the previous password so i change it with my email & then i change the wifi password aswell. 7-14 days later, it logs me out with a different password. What is cuasing this issue?
