Unfortunately, after reading Carmacks comments and other sources, it looks
like it will be very difficult to stop all cheating on quake/TF now that the
source code is out. He did say that certains hacks can be prevented by
client-server proxies but 100% security is difficult and more bandwidth is
used as more security is implemented ie lower ping.
If I was a cynical person, I would say Id wants quake off the net and for
people to purchase their more current products but releasing the source code
is a good thing for the programming community and gives future game
designers a decent place to start thier learning.

Actually there are two projects I know of that are attempting to fix the
hacked clients problem.

QuakeWorld Forever which I can't remember the page for and Quake Lives at
http://www.quakelives.com. I played on a QWF test server the other night
and boy was it shitty :) Ping was fine, but they'd some how mangled the
code so movement was very erratic, one minute you'd be fast as a scout the
next u'd be slow as a hwguy in TF. :) Mind you it was alpha-beta-beta so
its not really anything to go by ;)
