I cannot install Zipeg on my 64bit Windows7 machine because it comes up
with the error message "Could not create Java virtual machine." I
checked and Java is installed so I then checked to see if there are any
updates but received the reply that I already have the latest version
installed. Any ideas?

Zipeg needs 32-bit java runtime. I am speculating but it looks like you only have 64-bit runtime on your computer.
This video briefly explains how to install and verify 32-bit version of java runtime.

I tried using the 32 bit version too and there is still an error message starting zipeg.  I see the licence aggreement, it installs a bit, then that same error.  Any ideas?

I suffer from the same problem on 64 bit Vista, I have both 32 & 64
bit Java running and working OK with other applications.

Hi Vera,

You can extract all the files add a file to extracted folder and
create a new archive. See:
http://www.zipeg.com/faq#create
Zipeg is not full blown archive handler. It primary goal is
uncompress.
Hope this helps.

I hope this release candidate might work:
give it a try and let me know if it fixes the problem.

Mamasu,

Can you verify which version of Java and which version of Zipeg do you
have?
And what version of OS are you running. I will try to reproduce here
and see if I can fix it.

Thanks a lot in advance,

Leo

Hi folks,

To be sane I installed brand new clean Windows-7 64-bit on my VirtualBox and followed the steps:
1. Download latest version of Zipeg from http://www.zipeg.com
2. Run it
3. I told me java is not installed and opened http://www.java.com in browser window.
4. Download and run Java installer.
5. Re-run Zipeg installer.
6. Made sure everything worked.
The screen-cast video is here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PT05fZk_Qcg
if you have any further troubles with the installation - I suggest uninstalling all obsolete versions of java from your W7-64bit and reinstalling java 1.6.0_30 or better (aka: Version 6 update 30) from http://www.java.com

I too am having the same problem i have the 32 bit java and the 64 bit windows 7 and it says "Could not create Java virtual machine". but to by pass it till they fix the problem go to your files look up where the zipeg is stored then click on the zipeg with the java icon (executable jar file) and then you can use the program. I hope they fix it soon because you can not make a shortcut of that file.
Usually your location will be:
C:>Users>(YOUR PROFILE NAME)>AppData>local>Zipeg>Application> and your there.

So, it sounds like zipeg requires a 32bit java.  However, if you visit

http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

You can see that only 64bit java installs are available on Oracle Java. No 32bit java.

Any possibility to release a java 64bit compatible zipeg?

I am working on 64-bit port but unfortunately it is not easy.
Zipeg uses a lot of low level libraries that were written long time ago, in C language and with no 64 bit pointers in mind.
Thus porting UI is relatively easy, bringing those legacy libraries up to date is not.
I may end up doing just ZIP and RAR for 64 bit version and referring to older versions for compatibility support.
And 32 bit Java is still available for most of the platforms but Mac OS:
For Mac OS however Apple still supports 32 bit Java 6 thru Software Update with latest 1.6.0_45
See:
for older platforms and newer versions of Mac OS get it automatically.
