but! this is odd.... As the program will only log data from the inverter (Power Mr HMS-3K-24V) when the software is running, i have the program set to auto start up during a PC reboot (windows updates, windows craps its self, loss of power etc)
computer is set to turn back on if power failure, or reboot and restart Watchpower program and that works ok....sort of.. read on

3: i put the program back the start-up folder (used the the short cut from the desktop as the pointer in the start folder) rebooted the PC, Watchpower auto started as expected, but with no logging (no new update from the inverter)

watchpower download

I know you said the prog starts, but this page offers alternatives to start-up folder.
Does prog need admin permissions? Etc.
Anywho, check this page.

What you could do is instead of launching it from the startup folder, create a Scheduled Task in Windows with the trigger being "At log on". Then in the "Advanced settings" section of that trigger, set a delay of maybe 2-3 minutes to give any other services time to get started before the application launches.

update...
i tried running the task DIRECTLY from the task scheduler by hitting the "run".. same issue the program runs but no logging
(I then killed the task again and tried using the icon on the desktop... works perfectly program runs and logging)

Move the 'logging' data file to a new document directory (your choice of name), if under the programs parent directory.
Check the data file attribute is 'A'.
-not sure where the log file is kept although i searched each file using a search program for the last time stamp and found a file called "log62.dat" under the folder datas\log and this file is a ".dat" file so mostly gibberish in that file, being a database file i presume that java reads?

-The software doe not have the ability to configure any settings.
(just able to set parameters to the inverter, like charge volts, disconnect volts, max charge current and the like... all to do with the inverter it`s self.

hhm dont know... it looks like it has it`s own flavour of java as when the program starts i see"javaw.exe" running in the background.
when the watchpower is installed the program installs what looks like of bunch of java stuff in subfolders

What you need to do is to run watchpower.exe twice; each for success and failure. You want to compare the output in Procmon. Hopefully you will see errors in the Result column for the failure case. Operation, Path and Detail will then provide clue as to what is failing.

as much as i like mucking around with these type of devices like the raspberry pi i`m looking for simplicity...
i just want to be able to sit at my main desktop and view the stats, with i can do perfectly (as long as the PC does not reset)
(i have remote access from my photo to PC if required)

UPDATE: The shortcut on the desktop is set to run with admin access so all good program and loggin work
(why this desktop short cut wont work when used in the task schedule?, that is still to be worked out..

BUT...
i run the program file watchpower.exe directly from it`s folder location with no admin access and there is no logging..
i then ran watchpower.exe with administrator access and the logging work perfectly....

i put the password back in rebooted, when the watchpower started the program runs but no logging....hhhmmmm
(i closed that session of watchpower and double clicked the icon on the desktop and it all worked perfectly program + logging)

it looks like some hiccup in the task schedular and or the windows start-up not getting the privilege (password?) to run properly... (cant see what a password has to do with the logging aspect of the program??)

i still have some experimints to ty (setup on a clean windows 10 machine and see if i can replicate the error)
it could be some wierd thing on my PC ? windows 10 upgraded to a "TPA modified 11" ?????

I have found that Windows 10 "Program Files" and "Program Files (x86)" have security locks to prevent installation of malware, and I usually change the relevant directory security settings to allow access to things like logging directories.
