For licensed users upgrades are free for up to six months from purchase date. After that, VP will continue to fully function but a fee will be required in order to register the newest. Retain your old install file and registration info.
So, your license code should be valid for any release within six-months of purchase. Of course, any version can be installed and tested - as a trial. Certain features won't be available. Old versions, with their dates of release, are available here.
Instability wise, the version I was using was absolutely terrible with large files. By large, I mean around 2GB (approx 40 minutes) of 1080p 60fps. If I'm editing in the clip editor, I have to wait for it to re-render. Honestly, it's not really fit for purpose in this regard.
Significant improvements have been made in speed and handling since the 6.x/7.x versions. And there will be more to come when a 64-bit program is released - date unknown. There are several ways to handle large, high-res files. Rarely are there problems with 1080 HD. Editing with proxies, even on high-end systems,, or PCs with less than high-end hardware, is not uncommon.
The upgrade policy is published in several places. Here's one... In reality, NCH is pretty generous, allowing a six-month window for free upgrades...and new releases are free for use, unlicensed, with limitations.
Share a project and someone will check it out. Not the export, but the PORTABLE project. Just follow the PORTABLE PROJECT instructions here. The process is not difficult, talks only a few minutes and can be private.
If it contains sensitive material link it in a personal message (PM). Click the envelope above. It won't be passed on or retained. Use FILESAVE PORTABLE PROJECT AS, not simply SAVE PROJECT, and don't forget to get a shareable, public link - not one that is restricted.
I always knew that Videopad ran for six months before upgrades were chargeable, and during that time it ran okay. After using Videopad for a year and a few good productions, I thank the company for a relatively low-cost video editor, but it's time I moved on and frankly I have a lot of criticisms.
Too much time lost waiting for the software to stop buffering blocking out every preview, and no option to reduce the playback resolution, an omission which destroys workflow/production. After a year and upgrading to V8.16, the software is still hanging/not responding, far too often. And when you want to stabilise a video, it takes far too long. These annoying bugs are still present after a year's use, and thirty (time-consuming) productions in the bag. Everything seems to take twice as long as it should.
Frankly the upgrade fee doesn't seem worth it, and all-in-all I could lose hours in a day trying to find workarounds and waiting for Videopad to behave. But as a low cost entry-level product, it's not bad for home videos.
The 'free' version is a trial that you can install and test at anytime. It never expires, just like the licensed version, but there are feature and export limitations. There have been substantial changes and improvements since the 6.x series that you might want to check out.
Before the update I was using it and it worked still but now that I updated to 10.xx it unregistered my key and it says my key is old and I cant register it and im forced to buy a new one?
It stated nowhere my Paid for license key can be "invalid" because of a software update considering the same Software while it was still considered registered before this update, there was also no warning this would happen (From what i know this is also illegal)
I have Evidence of purchase and I got the registered key on me.
If i really have to pay for it again im gonna switch because the update unregistered my key I had no say in that.
There's no mandate to update. If your purchased release is working well stick with it. You can always go back to the earlier version, and it's likely that you won't even have to re-register. The installer usually can be found here... "C:\Program Files (x86)\NCH Software\VideoPad" (or similar without the X86).
Pretty generous? 6 month grace period? My ass. Then minute i finished a project i was working on on the new update, the program wouIdnt let my convert to mp4 without whipping out my mighty credit card. I also was definitely not warned of a potential update or that I would no longer be able to use the program after the update and that the money I forked out to get this program wasn't updates included. Also I can't imagine how NCH wants us to go through the list of 100's of unorganized installer files to find the old version. Make it two people switching.
Unlicensed versions can always be test driven. They are trials until licensed.. Some features may not be available after a trial period. There's also a free version, with basic features..
If you take the time to provide needed info, the peer-support folks here will help work around issues and locate a version that was released within your six-month license window. You won't be out any money and the program won't be hobbled.
Many editing, financial and other programs are now offered on only a subscription basis. NCH has that option as well. If you want unlimited upgrades at no extra cost - but for the subscription fee - then that's the way to go.
I still have the old version 10.43 of videopad installed, because it's fast and stable (except for some minor bugs). That's why I use it for big projects. For small projects, I use various newer versions of videopad, e.g. v12.39 and all 13.x versions, so I can test them without any risks.
Because I'm using various versions, I noticed a really big speed difference in building previews (=in the timeline, the green bar above the video clip, that builds up from the left to the right): Version 10.43 is way faster than all versions 12 or 13! To be sure I started a benchmark test, this is my test setup:
