Many of you have heard or seen in the news. However, I wanted to follow up. A few of us were in ShowLow to race the Bike the Bluff race this morning. Jerry and Gino were both racing the Masters 55+, quite a large group, with my group of women just behind. The group of riders hit by the truck were Jerry’s group of riders and just behind him. One of the cyclists hit was Gino. It was a horrific site to see as as so many were injured. Gino was stable at the scene but with multiple injuries, including two broken arms, nose, and a brain bleed. He is being airlifted to Albuquerque and is awake. We were able to locate his wife and daughter and take them to him before being transported. Several other Arizona cycling friends were seriously injured. This was the most horrific site to see and so many affected by this senseless act. Please keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers. I will continue to keep you posted about Gino.

My apologies. In the chaos of everything that has happened I should have specified that Gino is Longino Bustillos. I assumed everyone else called him as such. Just an update…
His daughter informed us that the Medivac will be there shortly to transport him to Albq, mainly to monitor brain bleed and repair other injuries. They have family there and appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers. Others injured are also really really needing thoughts and prayers.

From his brother in law:

Latest update:

He arrived in Abq last night around 8.  Wife and daughter made it from ShowLow around midnight.  He is scheduled for his surgery tomorrow.  He slept last night but is having some memory issues.  The brain bleed is stable, his left arm has more serious breaks, but both are broken, broken nose in two places, a couple of broken fingers, serious road rash on his legs, chest & chin and one of his eyes is swollen but they haven't found anything wrong with it on his CT scans.

A few other racers are still critical and  have life altering injuries.

Please continue to keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers.

Good morning,

Longino is currently at UNMH ICU. He is undergoing surgery for his arm as we speak. They were also able to reset his nose yesterday. I know some people may want to reach out to him or send him something. The family has asked that we hold off due to him still being in ICU and also due to covid restrictions. The best thing to do at this time is just keep him and the other cyclists in your thoughts and prayers. Please do know that he is doing good and now alert and even has his sense of humor. When asked what year it is, he said, "1999, Let's party!"

We have also received word that a few of the others are stable and improving, of course with a long road ahead and with life altering injuries.

Asking for continued thoughts and prayers.
Tamatha

Everyone,

Even though I'm not part of the team anymore, my wishes and heartfelt sympathies goes out to everyone involved in this horrific accident. I appreciate Tammy for keeping us all in the loop, and as always anything I can do outside of the state to support those affected by this I'll be happy to provide.

Stay safe everyone, people suck

Update: Longino’s surgery was canceled last minute due to a bad accident. It has been postponed for tomorrow.

Also, Jerry and I were both interviewed and will be on Fox and CBS news at 9 and 10.

Here is one of the latest news reports and includes more information about the driver. Naturally, he had multiple priors.

On a lighter note, one of our AZ cycling friends is doing better. Although he has two broken vertebrae and multiple other fractures and a chest tube for his punctured lung, we was able to stand today and upgraded from ICU. We are still awaiting updates for a few others.

Great to hear that riders are positively progressing in such short time.

Hopefully the judge that will be assigned to this criminals arraignment has the mental capacity to put this scum away for life without needing the approval of a jury comprised of bleeding hearts. Criminal lawyers willing to defend this idiot should join him in prison. There is no justifiable argument to defend his actions, and they clearly consist of multiple purposefully pre-mediated acts of intentional manslaughter. Absolutely sick to my stomach, and can’t begin to comprehend the degree of PTSD the riders that were involved in this are going to be enduring much less the physical recovery process.

Thank you for keeping everybody in the loop Tammy. And again, glad to know that you and Jerry were not involved.

Sad to say, we all need to be on the defense out there. I have dealt with more inconsiderate drivers in recent time, and I have ALWAYS done my best not to be “that jacka** road cyclist hogging the road” while riding solo or with the group.

Be smart, headphones out, choose safe routes, ride during calm hours if possible, and always have your head on a swivel.

Thank You,
Matthew A. Camilli

The latest update:

I just touched base with Lonnie’s wife and he has been upgraded from ICU to ‘trauma’. He had surgery to his left arm, yesterday. She has yet to speak with the ortho regarding the surgery, but we can assume that no news is good news. Continued thoughts and prayers needed for him, the other injured cyclists and everyone involved.

Stay safe…
