What do you do for backups?

I use a combo of:

- arq [1] for general mac OS backup
- time machine to external USB drive for quick recovery in case of crisis (I don’t trust it btw)
- daily zfs snapshots to remote boxes of important stuff
- tarsnap [2] for critical & secure things (ssh keys, password safe)

If not, what are you using for your backups?

BTW I’m slowly but surely moving away from backblaze and related services as they kill my mac’s performance all the time. The plan is to move to a mix of tarsnap & zfs, maybe like http://www.infracaninophile.co.uk/articles/hotchpotch/#backupsnap-zfs.sh

Latest ZFS for awhile now. Find it very stable (not for everyone yet). ;)

ZVOL for OS X necessary stuff like Mail, FCP X, etc., each formatted HFS+

The main OS X disk clones itself/changes with SuperDuper to a ZVOL.

All ZVOLs have snapshots daily and/or hourly, which send to a remote system (SSH) just in case.

Slowly moving all old MacZFS processes to this new approach. Currently 30 systems running this way (about another 60 will be updated over the year). Every quarter I randomly pick a system to restore from remote to ensure backup integrity.

All systems have a 6 mth snapshot uploaded to Amazon Glacier.

That is absolutely essential. I like to tell people that if they've not
tested their backups they *don't have backups*. They have hopes.

Yeah. Had one 4 years ago that lost 6 mths of data using a 'service'. Data that was required by law to be kept 10 years. ;) Oh the looks on the faces when the 'service' informed them it was not the 'service's problem. I reminded them the about the money they must have saved. Didn't go over well. ;)
