I've created my first setup project using Visual Studio 2010. I've noticed that when I build the setup project it generates an MSI installer file and a setup.exe executable. However, I seem to be able to just right click on the MSI file and choose install to install my application rather than running setup.exe.

Does the setup.exe file that is generated do anything other than just fire up the MSI file? When distributing my application can I just provide the MSI file rather than the MSI file and the setup.exe file?

For the past 2 months everytime I connect online, setup.exe loads in the background and proceeds to destroy my data usage allotment forcing me to work at 2x speeds for the rest of the billing cycle. Task Manager does not 'see' it and I have automatic synch turned off in my profile settings. I know it's an Adobe program because Windows 10 displays it in its built in App Usage Utility with a very clear Adobe icon logo.

I understand your suggestions. One point. If by "uninstall every cc app" you mean specific applications like Photoshop and Lightroom then I hope this thread remains open until August 6. Since setup.exe has shredded my data usage, I can't tie up my computer for the amount of time needed to install all the cc apps at 2x speed and must wait until then to regain 4g speed.

There are many apps called setup.exe, probably millions of them. Adobe will have a lot. So, are you able to tell which specific one it is? Task manager does see all apps if you tell it to. Possibly it reports a different name, so look for apps using a lot of network.

Hi,
the current path of the setup.exe is D:\Users\Jürgen\Desktop\MED-100WIN-CD-420_5-0-4-0_Win64 and after changing the path to C:\Users\Juerg\Desktop\MED-100WIN-CD-420_5-0-4-0_Win64 the setup.exe is now working!
It was the special character ü in my User Folder that somehow messed the startup up; thank you very much for pointing that out - i would've never guessed it myself!

Which project type are you using? Basic MSI? InstallScript? Or InstallScript MSI? The project type should be indicated in square brackets on the InstallShield title bar when your affected project is open: []

By manually, do you mean right-clicking the already built setup.exe and manually renaming the file itself that way with the Rename option? Or does manually include specifying a project setting that causes the built setup.exe to have the specified name automatically? Or both?

Are you looking for a way to programmatically set the setup.exe file name in the project settings by programmatically updating the project file then building the project via an automation script?

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks!

I'm using a basic MSI, set to a single executable. Manually means renaming setup.exe every time I do a new build. I'm looking for a setting I can change so that the program outputs the desired file name every time I build.

Renaming the setup.exe this way does work, but it appears to opens up InstallShield to hackers. We have put a hacked version of mpr.dll in the same folder as the newly named setup.ext, let's call it MySetup.exe. When I run MySetup.exe, the mpr.dll in the setup folder is executed and it shouldn't be. It's only if the name of the setup file is setup.exe does InstallShield locate the correct version of mpr.dll in the Window\System32 folder.

When I try to run setup.exe to install the student edition of Creo 8.0 it asks me if it can make changes to my computer but then does nothing when I say yes. An application error did appear in Event Viewer, I pasted it below.

I am trying to download ArcGIS 10.7.1 for Desktop Student Trial. After downloading ArcGIS Desktop and running the ArcGIS_Desktop_###.exe, I get a folder with Setup Files, Install.htm, and Setup.exe. When I run setup.exe, nothing seems to happen and I do not get a pop up window that tells me to install completely. If I try running setup.exe from the terminal I get the following message "bash: ./Setup.exe: Permission Denied"

When I click on the HP icon on my desktop, a box pops up entitled "user account central, Device setup.exe" which is confusing because my printer recognizes the printer and the print jobs go to the print que but won't print. Is this an indicaator that I have to reinstall the printer. Please advise.

I just packaged an install shield application with same scenario. It had setup.exe file in this location : C:\Program Files\InstallShield Installation Information\E137CCD2-91AD-4072-B3AB-42DB66ECBBEB\setup.exe.This setup.exe file was uninstalling the application. In this case as well, it was not a silent uninstall.I created uninstall.iss using this command : setup.exe -r -f1uninstall.iss......I used this switch "-r" to record all the user interface changes while uninstall(in other words to make it silent).

Locate the registry entry under HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall. YOu should be able to track down the location of another setup.exe which could have another paramaters. Use that path of setup.exe along with some parameters like uninst or something and use your newly created ISS file for uninstall. It should do the trick.

I have tired this "\setup.exe" -s -f1"\uninstall.iss" and the string from the registry with the silent switch. Same result. It runs Installer windows silent and then comes up with "Genesys Installation Wizard" window. I still cant find a way to make it silent.

Thanks for any insight. I am in the process of setting up our PROD and test environments for my company. Every so often I need to restore one of the environments from backup. For that I need to use the repository snapshot manager and the QLIKSense setup .exe. The problem is that some one on my team keeps removing the setup exe. So I need to download it again. The real problem is that I can never find the download for QLIK sense server on the QLIK site. I keep going to the download page and filling out the questionaire and it keeps giving me Qlik_Sense_Desktop_setup.exe. IN particular I am looking for 3.2

Thankfully setup.exe is safe to run as long as it comes from a trusted source. If you download a program from the internet, make sure that the website is reputable and that you trust the publisher before running setup.exe.

Running setup.exe is easy! First, locate the file located in the folder of the program you want to install. For example, if you want to install a new game, locate the setup.exe file in the installation files for the game.

NOTE: The codeblocks-20.03-setup.exe file includes Code::Blocks with all plugins. The codeblocks-20.03-setup-nonadmin.exe file is provided for convenience to users that do not have administrator rights on their machine(s).

I have a CD where I burnt all the files required to install a program and when I run setup.exe it installs as expected. Today, I have noticed that if I copy the contents of the CD to my computer and I try to run setup.exe the installation fails. In particular, it is unable to load the files from the folders that were copied together with the setup.exe files. It gives the error "Impossible to find conf\10" and it prompts me to provide a valid installation path but all paths are rejected with error invalid path. What's causing this?

My old computer died and I have replacede it with a secondhand Dell Dimension 3000, running under XP Home with McAfee Internet Security. I have some old CDs with applications I want to install, but have been unable to get setup.exe to launch. Of course, too many things have changed to be sure that this is a McAffee problem, but I wonder if someone can offer any suggestions?

You could try right-clicking the setup.exe and go to the Properties tab, then the Compatibility tab/Show settings for all users and see if you can run it in compatibility with Windows 95 and see if that works?

Took me a while to find how to resolve this (first guess was an incompatibility between packages) but here is a simple first try in case you get the infamous "setup.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows".

On Windows, open the command prompt with Administrator privileges. The Oracle Universal Installer executable, setup.exe, provides several options. For help information about the full set of these options, run setup.exe with the -help option, for example:
