Anupama Chopra, the Hindustan Times movie critic said, "Dedh Ishqiya is worth watching just for Abhishek Chaubey's ambition. He is not constrained by the demands of the box office."[17] Giving it 5 out of 5 stars, Rediff India's movie critic Raja Sen called Dedh Ishqiya a genuinely smart film.[18]

In another Firstpost review, Mihir Fadnavis said: Dedh Ishqiya is smarter, funnier, richer and way more gorgeous than its predecessor. If you're a fan of clever lines with terrific actors, great writing, masterful direction and Urdu poetry, Dedh Ishqiya hits your sweet spot. If you don't really give a damn about any of this and just want a fun time at the movies, Dedh Ishqiya is perhaps the most hilarious thriller Bollywood has produced.[21]

This article investigates the ostensibly paradoxical relationship that exists between the theme of excessive love, as suggested by the title of Abhishek Chaubey's film Dedh Ishqiya (2014), and the actual representation of it in the movie, which is not only restrained and disproportionate, but is also looked at with suspicion and contempt. It examines the logic of this seeming contradiction through the other two related themes that Chaubey's chef-d'œuvre foregrounds, namely that of intelligence and female desire. The quest for financial autonomy that the female protagonists of the movie are involved in-a necessary pre-condition for leading independent lives-is so inextricably intertwined with manipulation, dexterity, and subterfuge, that any overt expression of homoerotic female desire can only jeopardize their existing possibilities of self-aggrandizement. The heteronormative arrangements of Begum Para's palace thus constitute the elaborate mise en scène, behind which female desire is enacted through a politics of intelligence, resourcefulness, discretion, and anonymity. Through this strategic negotiation, which is also a tactical necessity, the female protagonists are not only able to con the con men in the movie, but also imagine alternative subject positions that recognize the need for both pragmatism and expediency as well as deconstructing heteropatriarchal economies of desire.

One of the key elements in this film are the seven stages of love as described by Khalu: dilkashi (attraction), uns (attachment), mohobbat (love), akidat (trust), ibadat (worship), junoo (madness) followed by maut (death). And all of these are not only described and discussed by Khalu, but they show up in the movie. Note the Beatles tee-shirt on Khalu. But one of the main pleasures of this movie is the finely tuned nuances of the actors. A glance, a shrug, the down turn of the eyes, or mouth were just so delicious.

@abhirup- sure, homosexuality is natural. but i guess at times it also exists because of the absence of heterosexual partner or because of a loving homosexual. examples- Fire movie and fashion movie. but in real life, i assume suh relations would be ephemeral. not sure.

I think that the makers wanted to go a little subtle\palatable on the lesbian aspect. Remember what happened with Fire?. So they needed to add that angle about an uncaring husband and loneliness bringing them together. All said and done its still a mainstream commercial film and they still had the guts to show them riding away together at the end..I am no expert on lesbianism, but i do believe that its not impossible for 2 heterosexual women to bond together like that and the makers have the liberty of showing such a relationship. Its also necessary for the heterosexual love affairs(naseer -madhuri, arshad-huma) to be convincing as well. Yeah but you are right about the homosexual aspect of their relationship. Its very much out there. But i dont agree with your view that a very stereotypically offensive portrait of gay men is presented. I mean from time immemorial, the nawabs have been portraid as debauched womanizers in our movies , so what if a different sexual orientation is presented here.Stereotypification is more on nawabs rather than about gay men IMO.

Well i compared those 2 actresses because there was a lot of talk about vidya being a better actress than madhuri period, over here as well as in other sites as well were dedh ishqya was been discussed and it was quite heartbreaking for me ? considering what a madhuri nut i am.Yeah you are right about the actors doing different kind of movies and perhaps mrityudand was the closest that madhuri came to doing a vidya kind of role and i liked her very much in that. But her real strength lie in beta,HAHK,Tezaab kind of roles where she is more of a star performer than just a pure character actor which is what Vidya is.Guess its sort of like comparing cary grant and dustin hoffman

All in all a very bold theme in a very hatkey hindi movie worthy of a second watch to get the nuances out. For instance, was begum once a nauch girl (mujara girl) in her youth? Was she someone who had seen a lot in her life before even getting married to the gay/uncaring nawab who saddled her with lot of debts and had to fend for herself against lecherous men? If she was doing Swyamvars for all these years what was the urgency to select a groom this very year? How did Khalujaan, a common thief suddenly become a high class poet.

I went to the movie for Madhuri, more than anyone/anything else. Her dance solo was an enjoyable affair, but I was unhappy with her character sketch. Like you said, there was no understanding of her psyched up nerves.

Yeah the nawab and begum pulling a wool on the rest of the world, well that would make a really entertaining movie. May be that could be a plot for DO ISHQYA ? . This alternate sexuality is a new phenomenon in our films and we will have to wait for sometime before we could get to see them handled in a more intelligent and mature way.Remember how long it took to address sensitive issues like terrorism, Inter religious relations even marital relations and adultery etc in our movies which were all stereotyped in our movies for such a long time(And in many instances still going on).

@BR
I had read the short story, but I missed the reference when I saw the movie. Still I got the homosexual relationship between the two women. Muniya (HQ) silent looks at the Begum (MD) and the scene that unfolds after Muniya spends her night with Babban is clear enough.

Yes! Thank you so much for this post! I am so glad you went ahead and tackled this reference and the lack of attention given to it! And bless this movie for pairing (sort of) Huma and Madhuri. Sigh. Brilliant tributes in this movie to so many amazing figures.

I saw this movie 2 days back and I am still shocked why is this movie becoming the talk of the town. the critics loved it, and so did the audience (as per the imdb rating). But I am perplexed. I have always relied on imdb for an indicator of a good bollywood movie but this one seems to be an exception, as per me.

Anyhow, the story is too laboriously over-stretched. The movie expands over 152 minutes when the plot becomes a bit too obvious just after interval. The twist was too weak to be called so as it was visible from miles away. The explanations and the motives behind the so-called twist , as explained in the denouement, are too weak and poorly crafted.

The story picks up an indefinite amount of time after the events of the first movie. Babban (Arshad Warsi) and Khalujan (Shah) continue to con their way through life in the hinterland and evade being buried alive by their former boss, Mushtaq (Salman Shahid). After a heist goes wrong, the duo chance upon the ultimate con: 'settling down' in a gigantic, nawabi palace occupied by the ridiculously rich Begum Para (Madhuri Dixit-Nene) and her companion Munniya (Huma Qureshi).

It's been 24 years since your beauty has dazzled my conscious.Your gazillion dollar smile always makes my knees goes weak Your grace, charm, dance movements all leave me speechless sigh. Here you took my breath away with your vulnerability :-)
The Urdu wordplay is the highlight which brims with an old worldly elegance;as for the casting it's pitch perfect;whether it's Shah as the veteran conman,Circuit is downright a riot or Huma who is a spicy firecracker in her own right and of course the inimitable Vijay Raaz who delivers some of the best gems.We need more from you Bro!!!It's such a delight to hear poetry rendered with heartfelt emotions. We need more films like this;Intelligent, regal, eloquent, the poetic recitations are enough reasons to watch this film! One of the year's best movies!

This movie challenges a lot of assumptions just by showing things as they happen. One big assumption is what love and romance look like. Madhuri and Naseerji have a classical poetic love story, perfect meetings, magic lines exchanged, even a flashback to a youthful meeting. And Huma and Arshad have a very lusty love story, fighting, then kissing, then sex. These are the templates we have learned to expect, the gender roles we are supposed to play. Arshad and Naseerji assume, after this, that they are in love with the women and vice versa. Because that is the rule, that is what this sort of behavior means.

I think many people in their convenience to not feel unsettled by the queer undertone of Dedh Ishqiya choose to remove the visible evidence of the same. Nevertheless, in a country where despite section 377 being removed, Dedh Ishqiya is a landmark film to include queer characters in regular bollywood setting without pointing it out and making it the crux of the movie. More such normalisation in films will make society realise the regularity and commonality of queer people being a part of the everyday community without any assumption.
