Yes, I've organised the lasses to have their Christmas celebrations
with their friends, the Cap'n to be in Saudi and I have bought two
chateau cardboards and a huge tin of Quality Steet. All I have to do
now is move the TV and all the un-read books up to the bedroom and
I'm set for the festive season...... :-P

Yes.
I Just have my fathers present to buy and something for myself.
I Have written and posted nearly all of my cards and got
everything else except the last minute basics milk, food.
Rebecca and I are having Christmas alone. I can do what I

I have sent most of my cards, but not all. Have bought some presents
(a new telephone/answering machine for my mother to drag her into the
1990's before we leave it!). I'm going for talking-books for everyone
I think this year. Then people can play them whilst stuck in traffic-jams.:-)
I have made the Christmas Pudding (sugar-free)...do people still put
silver charms in them? Also the Christmas cake which has brandy
regularly poured into it's base.

No. Went Christmas shopping yesterday in Brighton with my
sister-in-law and a friend of mine. I got a fair bit done but it
didn't help spending an hour and three quarters in the Cactus Canteen
eating Enchilladas! Nice meal, mind you!
I've done a fair number of cards and I've wrapped all the presents

I love the brussel sprouts and chestnuts combined. I only have them

That's what I didn't want to be doing. I end up forgetting people

Ermmm! When's Christmas again?
Until such time as everyone here tells me what they want Santa to
bring them, it all stays in the shops. I presume Mollie's done all the rest!
I'll be buying my present to me on Saturday (Manchester Model Railway

Mexican. I got hooked in California, firstly in a restaurant in
Hollywood that we were taken to by my friend Christine's Dad. That
was the first time I drank Margueritas. Phew! Wonderful stuff.l
The second time was last year in Santa Barbara. Equally good
Margueritas and the food wasn't bad either. Didn't drink alcohol
yesterday as I was driving.

How true :-/. Gary only buys one present - mine ( hopefully). I do
all the rest, buy, write and send all the christmas cards. Organise
decorations, lights, tree etc. This year we're eating out on
Christmas day, so at least I won't have to spend half Christmas eve
preparing the dinner and half Christmas day cooking it.

I've got all my cards - the ones I didn't get round to posting last
year - and maybe the year before. I will - I will - really I will this year!
Usually, if I see something which will make a good present for a
relative or friend during the year, I buy it, put it aside for a
Christmas present, and can't find it when I need it. Thus I have
dozens of thimbles about the house, all but one of which were
intended for Cheshirisation over the years. I have toys and games,
all of which my nephews and nieces have long outgrown.
I can't help feeling that I need a little help here. A good woman
would be second choice. For first choice, I'd have a naughty one.
APM
> My mother mentioned chestnuts. How do you cook them to go with the

Soak them for 24 hrs then cover them well in boiling water. Allow to
cool, then remove the shells, replacing the chestnuts in the water.
Taking them out one by one, remove as much of the skin off the
chestnut as you can: this is bitter. Simmer them in a fresh pan of
water until you can break one easily.
Drain. (Save the water for the gravy!) Melt some butter in a pan and
sauté the chestnuts.
Add them to the sprouts and mix carefully. The chestnuts should be
very fragile.

I went off to London with the very best of intentions, but despite
spending over £600, I only bought one Christmas present! (A new

I did buy lots of edible goodies in Harvey Nichols and Fortnum &

Hmm, maybe that's why I was admitted in a "doubled-up" state to the John
Radcliffe Hospital one Xmas Eve whilst doing my last minute Xmas
shopping!
Saw GP in the morning, "Um, I'll contact Consultant and call you", went
home then out shopping, painful, took an hour to get half a mile back to
the house in traffic jam to find two (or was it three?) answer-phone
messages from GP each increasing in state of "panic/urgency", last one
"You WILL go straight to the hospital NOW". (They thought appendix might
burst and GP knew I was driving ...)

I buy them from Iceland, never tried cooking them straight from the shells.

chestnuts, cooked in the oven and put in a bowl to eat as I shell
them. Lovely-jubbly!

My friends up in Abingdon call me "Purple Ronnie", "Ronnie" as in Ronnie
Barker (go on and on and on). As for "Purple" I ain't saying ... ! :-)

Orange are still the cheapest.
Vodafone are still arrogant bastards but I am still with them because I
nagged them so much they gave me a VIP card so I no longer have to call
each of their two services about problems ("you need to speak to the
airtime provider" call back 9-5 etc). I now have a list of 5 personal
mobile numbers for their VIP people and never call 100 any more. How did
I get this VIP card? Don't ask! They're usually for the Royal family, R.
Branson etc.
IMHO the best deal is Cellnet with their new tariff. If you make fewer
calls than your "talk plan" (say talk 30) then they say "you should have
been on talk 15 last month" - here - we'll put you back to that talk
plan and give you back the money you would have saved. If however you
used more calls and the next biggest talk plan would have been more
appropriate they say "you should have been on talk 60 - we'll put you on
that now and give you back what you would have saved".
Clever marketing.
Orange will MATCH anyone elses talk plan, if you come up with a tariff
from a competitor.
If you can try to borrow a phone for a week and go to all your usual
places on your travels. Although the main part of the country IS covered
there are "holes" so it's wise to test it out first.

Yeah, families are the worst.
Did you pass?

Er... "Corbett" I meant.

What? Their pets are serial killers too?

I'd like to wish you well with the result. (With a measure of bonhomie!)

Exactly! Therefore, first choice would be a bad woman - hence, my
suggestion of Fifi as first choice.. you'd be second, of course Fran :)

You have got me worried now.
You'll never guess what I do with them after I
have chopped them up:
I eat them.........

Oi!! My Big Bruv's reading this!!!<g>
Adam's a 17 year old 15 stone 6'2" 'bearded' schoolboy <apparently>
with a tendency towards severe brattiness BTW, Oingas <Aonghas who
started all this> is old enough to know better and has promised to
send me a nice classical tape <if he ever gets the wind-up mechanism
on his hi-fi working ;)> and Fran <Frances> has a hard time getting
the brunt of the blokes' 'humour' - also has a tall, beautiful
willowy 23 year old blonde daughter who is in Bali and a wonderful
mother Marion, hence the reason for most of the male population of
Zetnet enquiring about flights to Bali ATM....;))

I haven't forgotten. As I can't find the fault myself the amp will
have to go away and be fixed.
If I can adjust the speed of my No2 turntable (runs a bit fast) I'll
use that on the system in the study. Tomorrow. Old enough to know
better? What's better than a big wooden spoon? (Apart from a bigger one.)

Fifi, she's my step-daughter! She looks a lot like her father did
when he was her age (although he was darker - in other words he
didn't highlight his hair like Jo does!).
Karen. Jo's sister, could almost be mine - she's a little bit shorter
and is very dark haired. The only thing they have in common
physically are green eyes!

Uhm, that isn't *quite* right, is it Fi? I'm not saying my Mum isn't
wonderful, but..........

I think you are quite right. I wish Christmas
would dissappear in a cloud of smoke. The
problem is that other people have expectations
of one and do not understand that one finds
Christmas a meaningless celebration that, even
if one believed in the religious aspect of it,
bears little resemblance to the original reasons
for the festival and has turned instead into a
commercial bonanza of extraordinary waste.
The new year is a festival that I celebrate, as
it means something to me. At the moment we have
here about seven hours daylight, depending on the
day, still reducing. After the new year the days
get longer and one has all to look forward to as
our part of the world exposes itself to more and
more sunlight per day.
I might add that I celebrate the new year on the
21st. of December. (and again on the 31st. Jan
in order not to offend people, of course.)
