Speaking at a conference in London last week, Chambers outlined Cisco's
view of the future of the internet, and claimed that data and voice
integration would trigger a fall in the cost of telephone charges that
would eventually result in free calls.
"You're going to have one connection for entertainment, data and voice.
Voice is going to be commoditised and then it will be free," he
predicted. He said networks of home appliances were going to be a major
market for networking technology and admitted that Cisco's partnerships
would alter as a result. "Our major alliances are going to be with the
likes of Sony and Panasonic rather than with Microsoft and Compaq."
Chambers is currently in the UK on a meet-and-greet tour of Government
leaders and company heads. He said he recently met up with Prime
Minister Tony Blair and Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Mandelson.
Among the subjects discussed was the ability of the internet to
revolutionise the health service by allowing the seamless transfer of
medical records to hospitals and insurance companies.
