'Steady Eddie'

Last week's live online chat at the government's Enterprise Zone web
site drew 7,500 websurfers to hear the forthright views of Bank of
England chairman 'Steady Eddie' George, recently voluble on the effects
of recession in the north-east. Sadly, his answers were less likely to
stimulate business than to put it to sleep. On the right time to join
Emu: 'The general answer is that there's no answer to the question.'

On whether or not the costs of Emu were justified: 'You'll have to ask
Gordon Brown, not me'

On how open the proceedings of the European Central Bank should be:
'that's something on which the debate will continue.' And so to the last
question in the least controversial hour of chat in political history:
'Do you like your nickname?' 'Well, that's not really for me to say,'
said Eddie, steady to the last.
