The following announcement from BT has appeared in the uk.telecom newsgroup:

> BT's 20 million residential customers will be able to make UK calls
> on Christmas Day and New Year's day for no more than 50p per call.
>
> The offer applies to most direct-dialled calls made from BT residential
> lines between midnight and midnight on both December 25 and January 1.
>
> In addition, BT will be charging its cheaper evening and night time rate
> for most direct dialled international calls made by all customers -
> business and residential - on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
>
> Full details of BT's festive arrangements can be found at
> http://www.bt.com/World/news/newsroom/index.htm

On checking their web-site it seems that 'non-geographic numbers' are
excluded, so the discount won't apply to the 0845 number. But it
does seem that anyone using the 0161 number to Manchester, or the
Lerwick and NI numbers, should be able to stay on-line all day for no
more than 50p! That's if, like me, you haven't got anything better
to do on 25 Dec and 1 Jan :-)

Incidentally, I have no connection with BT (other than paying the
horrendous amount of money they bill me each quarter) :-)
