He relaxed as he unpacked his kit, even hummed to himself gently as he
quietly assembled the test gear. His mind was on autopilot; his
comprehensive training made the construction of the HRC Sister Ray
almost automatic.
"Tripod <hmm hmm hmm> Illudium Q36 Explosive Space Modulator <hmm hmm>
EIDE control unit <hmm hmm hmm hmm>" - all carried out with ruthless,
mechanical precision to a soft, almost inaudible rendition of a Bach
tune he had heard that morning on FOFM. He was a little annoyed that
he couldn't remember the name, but it was no distraction.
In less than two minutes, the Sister Ray was complete. The question
was: would it successfully penetrate the great Dome?
"Oh well," he thought to himself. "There's only one way to find out."
He slipped on the HRC Trenchcoat(tm) eye protectors and swung the
wicked-looking muzzle of the device so that it pointed in the direction
of the Dome. He knew that aiming it wasn't too critical - as long as
the incident beam hit the Dome at greater than 60 degrees, losses to
internal reflection would be negligible. There was nothing more to do -
so without any further hesitation, he pressed the activator.
He wasn't disappointed that there was no sound, or even that there was
nothing to see. He would have been surprised if there had; part of the
reason for mounting a stealth mission had been HRC's assurance that the
device was entirely unnoticable in operation. He had only insisted on
the Trenchcoats(tm) because they looked so darn cool.
As a long-time devotee of HRC equipment, he had every confidence that it
was working; that a tight beam of cluon and anticluon particles were
now mutually annihilating, thus depolarizing a small section of the Dome
and weakening it sufficiently to allow bogons to "tunnel" out into the
outside world.
He glanced at his watch. He didn't want to push his luck - thirty
seconds should be more than enough. He killed the beam and pulled the
now redundant SR apart almost recklessly, forcing the components back
into his kitbag. He couldn't leave it behind, for obvious reasons - and
he couldn't blow it up, for equally obvious reasons.
His mission over, he started back to the DZ, to melt back into the
crowds - lost, unseen, amid the mass of humanity that habitually
thronged the ngs within the mighty Dome. Thence to the outside world
to see if the SR had done its job.
"Brandenburg Concerto," he thought to himself. He smiled. It seemed
somehow appropriate.

In those days it was supposed to be the equivalent of what we might
refer to as "elevator music".
Rather nice, though. No 4 (I think it is) is my fave, but not by the
London Philharmonic who "murdered" it. Von Karayan (spelling) I think is
the best rendition.

The St. Louis Symphony Orchestra did a beautiful job with it, though,
when Leonard Slatkin was still the director. He subsequently took
the job at London...
He was excellent!

Apparently Zet require 30 days notice, so I got this lovely little
return email saying they'd disconnect me upon completion of the
required 30 days.
Hmmm.
