HD Crashed :(

I'm recovering what data I can but having to use old pc to do this on
which is toiling under the workload.
Hence, reading and posting may be a bit sporadic for the next few
days or so and if I fail to reply to anything please don't take
offence - I had to delete a lot of my mdb to make space.

Thanks, but I'd like to back up 600 MB and counting! I have a 120MB
spare, but no room in the pooter to poot 'er.
Last time I poked around inside I dislodged a cable, replaced it,
dislodged another, etc. I had the thing in bits for a whole afternoon.
No, any solution has to be external - or a full tower.

I use a 1Gb HDD in a removable caddy to hold everything which isn't
reloadable from CD. All personal stuff is on that drive, plus last
week's Zimacs (replaced each week). A different 840Mb drive holds
all the games plus the little programs that make the games "go" -
directX etc. The main HDD is partitioned and the windows bit is
regularly formatted so that bits of uninstalled programs don't linger.

Depends how much you've got to backup?
At the moment I just backup data onto Zip disks but if you needed
fast recovery, how about another hard drive and back everything up
onto that? You could put it into a caddy and store the drive in a
fire proof safe.
Theres a major difference in price between Zip drive and SCSI
external hard drive so perhaps a compromise of a Jaz drive or Ditto
tape drive?
Just a few ideas...

Be aware that some parallel port SCSI adapters don't supply TERMPWR
signal, as required by Zip drives.

I would - if I had room for another caddy. I've only three spaces
for units of that size, and I have caddy, 5¼" floppy, CD ROM.

No room in the midi-tower - it's like a box of spaghetti as it is.

Yes, but can't I (for example) have more than one HDD in an external
unit, and run the pooter on (say) Win 3x, win 9x, Linux, all on their
own discs?

No Mark, that was what I thought, and did.
C: backed up to Zip disks, with just basic programs and W95.
All data and fancy programs on D:
All of D: backed up on E: Good eh?
Wrong!
The motherboard trashed both D: and E: losing all of the irreplaceables.
W'95 was getting so corrupted that it had to be re-installed in any
case, so I re-used very little of what was on the Zip disks.
Just wished fervently that I had dropped some of the data folder on
to one of those Zip disks.
I am now keeping a much closer check on what programs I load, where
they go, and where they came from, and hoping that I do not have a
crash before I have enough pennies for a CD-rom burner.
I should have known better as I even had hard disk recovery problems
way back in my Atari days.
Even now I tend to leave the computer on rather than turned off,
having learnt that most hard drives fail on switch on.
