A hacker destroyed over 4,500 web directories in the worst case of
computer vandalism ever to hit New Zealand, reports The New Zealand
Herald. Web site owners were first led to believe that a storage disk
failure by the Auckland based Internet Group was to blame. They were
told that, without their own copies, the web pages were permanently
lost and could not be obtained. Only several days later did the Internet
Group realise they'd been hacked and were forced to issue an abject
apology to customers.

The hacker had attacked via a 'security hole' in a 'CG1 script' - a
small program on a web page and then damaged the disk drive and
emergency computer server.
