DG catches date bug a year early

DATA General has been struck not by a year 2000 problem but a 1999
problem. The company has issued an urgent warning to customers that
some of its Motorola-based servers may experience disruptions on 1
January 1999. The problems centre around the hardware supplier's
Aviion machines, which are based on the Motorola 88k processor - a
family of systems that Data General is selling less and less of each
year. The year 1999 problem Will nevertheless affect a substantial
number of customers unless they update their chips with software
from the vendor.

A statement posted by Data General on its web site warns: 'This
update includes a fix to a 1999-related problem on 88k systems and
must be loaded immediately to prevent a system disruption on January
1 1999',

It does not specify the nature of the problem the glitch can cause.
The company says that they shipped the update to customers with
their hardware support agreements in June of this year. DG says that
it is distributing the update to all user that contact the
customer support centre.
