In early 2022, Konami finally brought over a true digital Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game (TCG), Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel to multiple platforms, including Android and iOS. It's not the first time, Yu-Gi-Oh! has arrived on mobile platforms. But none have shared the traditional (official TCG) ruleset. But a game staying true to one of the most popular TCGs in the world is enough reason to consider Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel as one of the best Android games to come out recently.

But of course, taming this card gaming beast is no easy feat on any trusty Android gaming phone, which is why we've put together a guide covering how to get started on your first competitive deck and all the essential tools Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel has to offer.

You jump straight into a tutorial and eventually learn the basic mechanics and controls for how Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel plays on Android. And as a well-deserved reward for completing the tutorial, you get to choose your starter deck:

If you previously played Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel on another device or platform, you can bypass these early steps and re-login into the app by using the data transfer feature. All you have to do is create or link a Konami ID and then log in with your credentials.

For players new to the franchise, Yu-Gi-Oh! is a collectible card game that locks players into 1-v-1 combat (duels) while enlisting peculiar magical and mythical monsters (or beings) in the form of monster cards. Players will set up monster cards to remove the opposing player's life points (LP).

The solo mode is the central hub for your single-player experience: split into gates, each incorporating a general theme. The first gate, Duel Strategy, is comparatively a tutorial extension to introduce more gameplay fundamentals: synchronization, link monsters, pendulum summoning, etc. and for new players, completing this gate helps you catch up to the modern-day game mechanics in Yu-Gi-Oh!, which is what we recommend as one of the first stops before heading to ranked.

Anything purchasable in the shop uses Gems: card packs, cosmetics, structure decks, and more. To get anywhere in this game, you'll be looking into using your Gems primarily on card packs. We've outlined all the primary beginner sources for obtaining Gems below.

Staple cards are cards that are important for deck building, and they can be generalized cards that fit into most decks. Fortunately, two staple cards, Monster Reborn and Raigeki can be easily obtained through Duel Strategy via solo mode. You can find the rest within the shop.

Upon arriving at the shop, your first few purchases should be on three sets: Solemn Judgment, Lightning Storm, and Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring. Later, you'll earn more staple cards either through limited-time events, updated content, or by getting lucky with your packs.

You'll have to craft SRs/URs to access these secret packs. Newly discovered secret packs are only available for 24 hours, so prepare to take advantage before the window closes. Below we walk you through how to craft cards so you can start uncovering secret packs.

You can generate and dismantle any card to spend or earn card points (CP) for that rarity. Foil cards (shiny/glossy) are worth more CP. New players should only focus on dismantling extra cards, which we cover in the steps below.

Secret packs are target-specific packs that focus on an archetype. These packs are imperative to deck-building since the last four cards are guaranteed to be part of that pack. So expect to spend most of your hard-earned Gems on these secret packs.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel is still considered one of the best card games on Android to date. Master Duel employs a free-to-play model that doesn't heavily punish you for spending resources early. But it rewards players for planning carefully when constructing new decks.

smaller update this month. i've opened some neat staples but nothing to change up my strategy very much. i'm back on the earth pile, but i cut the traptrix stuff as i replaced trap holes with more generic backrow and realized the monsters didn't individually do enough for the deck.

i was really hoping to get to diamond in march, but the highest i got was a late-season plat 3 before falling back down to plat 5. maybe next month. i wrote that in the first week of april and then procrastinated finishing this post til now. i did not reach diamond next month.

while my overall winrate has increased, my winrate since last month is lower than that update's monthly winrate. i mostly attribute this to participating in the duelist cup, where i faced generally tougher matchups. i think playing events for gem rewards is pretty important for the sustainability of this challenge, at least if i want to keep it f2p, but it's usually worse for my numbers than ranked.

since the beginning of this challenge run, i've been stuck at level 6 on the master duel proficiency thing. specifically i was unable to perform 3 fusion summons. with super poly, though, i've finally been able to crest that hurdle. the next stage required a few ritual and pendulum summons, for which i made some terrible decks to play in early-season gold, and from there it was pretty easy to get to max proficiency. since writing that they have added more levels to the proficiency system. lol.

unfortunately i don't really have a use for the proficiency rewards. early on the legacy tickets were nice, but at this point i barely even open my legacy packs. however as a habitual completionist i still like the number going up.
