At this month's Earth Repair Meetup at Honest Weight, I’ll be giving a short, research-based talk on growing fruit in urban soils—especially in places with an industrial legacy. I’ll cover how contaminants like lead, arsenic, and mercury behave in soil, how they interact with common perennial fruits and shrubs, and what current science says about their actual risk in food crops. We’ll also go over practical soil safety strategies and why, based on the evidence, it’s generally safe to grow fruit in these environments with a few precautions.

Upcoming Educational Workshops
HVCC Fall Workshops will be Composting & Vermicomposting at Home and a new, two-part class Landscaping With Fruit. Registrations are managed by HVCC and are not yet open, but will be in the future.
Two opportunities to catch Composting: Simple Science, Hands-on Techniques, and Community Solutions at different branches of Albany Public Library. These workshops are free, and were developed as a partnership between myself and Zero Waste Capital District. Next up: 8.6.2025 @ North Albany Branch @ 6pm
