Can nicknames be made case-insensitive?

I just tried to add a friend and typed her nickname in all lowercase instead of using the two capital letters she has, and it didn't work. For dummies like me, can the nicknames be made case-insensitive?  :)

Hi there - this is to allow a wider variety of nicknames. We have already restricted the use of numbers, symbols, and emojis. If a person grabbed the name "Tommy", other variations such as "tommy" would at least still be available to other players, especially if they want to use their first names.
