category missing

I've tried the zemanta api with various sample text (even some from
wikipedia)
I've n't seen categories listed in any of the response..
Do I need to pass an special parameters in the request?

yes, depending on which categories you have access to you put the
categorization string into parameter return_categories

the public categories available to anyone are the dmoz ones, so you set
parameter "return_categories" to "dmoz" and you will get categories
returned
