Salaam,
I'm looking for an alternative to sf.net. It's stat service is down
for a while, pages loaded too slowly, release mechanism is at the dark
ages, issue tracker is so inconvenient, and there are more problems
around sourceforge.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Mohsen.

The first one is just an announcement website. It does give you
neither a source control (CVS/SVN), nor issue tracking. It's just a
place to annouce your project.

The second one is also just good for libraries and other java-related
things. The bad news is that access to java.net (project part) is
totally forbidden in countries with US export law restrictions
(including Iran, Syria, Sudan, and some other countries).

1. Launchpad: zekr is already registered there.
2. OSPDev.net.

WAS,
I would highly suggest google code http://code.google.com/ . It is
SVN based and I believe migrating sf to it wouldn't be an issue.

Yusuf

Salaam,

Same as java.net, it forbids its services in some countries (including
Iran, Syria, Sudan, and some other countries), according to US
sanctions against them.

Mohsen.

That's really a sad news!
but I seem to remeber that google is working inside Iran. And gmail
also does.
Just wondering why not google code ?
Additionally , source forge is an American company , right ? what Is
the difference then ?

Yes, almost all Google services work, but Google downloads (picasa,
google talk, chrome, ...) do not.

I don't know about legal issues for such companies. Microsoft for
example did not forbid any of their services yet, AFAIK.

have just heard about kenai http://projectkenai.com/ .
It is supported by Sun Microsystem to complete with google code.
Haven't try it yet but it sounds promising.

After Ramdan, I shall ISA contact someone from Google just to know
exactly why on earth Google Code is blocked in Iran and Syria.
I know there is an export regulation in the USA but this shouldn't
apply to online services (as far as I know).

Salaam,
Mohamed, thanks for keeping this post up to date :) and letting us
know about these services, but for now, I think sourceforge is the
best compared to other online software project service providers. It's
now quite stable (moved to another datacenter), gives you almost
unlimited diskspace, and provides not only svn or cvs, but also
mailing list, news, stats, wiki, remote shell, and free website space.

I investigated almost all other providers mentioned in this thread,
but none of them are comparable to sf.net.

Websites mentioned in the two last posts are only source repositories,
which target mainly for enterprise remote development, and so put
special limitations on their free offers (if any).

Thanks again,
Mohsen.

Salam,

what about github.com? Noticed that it's gaining popularity, but sure
what's the pros and cons of each though.

Salaam,

Git doesn't seem to be widely supported by IDEs for now. There is not
a mature plugin for Eclipse for this.
